Homebrew Cuadibra Species Details

"These people are so strange, with their lack of a governmental structure and their clear sophistication in spite of hunter-gatherer ways. I never thought that portal I found would lead to such a place as this, a people as this. They welcome me despite my obvious differences; they show me their young to play with; they lead me by the hand through their huts and show me the ways of living as one with the vibrantly colored planet. I have truly found a paradise."--Unknown traveler

Cuadibra are a strange race, a seemingly-ancient one. The key to their home was lost in time until an unnamed explorer created a map and notes on how to find them. For campaigns set in the Medieval era or past, their technology seems almost magical in its own way, as their planet, Ayowani, exists in a futuristic space age. For campaigns set in technologically-advanced eras, their machinery may be up to par or slightly less effective with the rest of the universe's. Their manner of powering their inventions will always remain hard to analyze, however.

Powerful yet Peaceful

It's extremely uncommon to find a Cuadibra that has a short fuse, and it's even rarer to find one with evil intent. Cuadibra are a communal species that rely heavily on one another to accomplish their goals, build new villages, and tend to the environment around them.
The Cuadibra's greatest power is their intelligence and ability to empathize with the world around them. If at all possible, a Cuadibra will attempt to rectify a situation with words rather than swords, and their use of speech has been called siren-like.

A Varied Race

All Cuadibra share the same basic features: large eyes without pupils, a humanoid body shape, powerful feet that are webbed, webbed hands, sharp canines, a long tail, a headdress, ears, and soft skin that can have any manner of markings. Every Cuadibra can use their headdress and tail as prehensile limbs and communication tools, and their skin colors vary greatly, from the common blue, green, and purple to the rarest of golden and red. A Cudaibra's skin is always desaturated unless a mutation is present.
Their headdresses also come in many shapes and sizes, as do their tails. While each Cuadibra may not be unique (since the species can 'asexually' reproduce by cloning themselves), they show a great variance from genetically-distinct individual to individual.

Troves of Knowledge

Most Cuadibra live on the coasts, though there are some who make their homes in the open ocean or alongside inland lakes, and every member of Cuadibra society is taught how to live off the land without the need for agriculture or overly-intrusive building practices. Due to this, they are extremely knowledgeable in the use of herbs, rocks, fungi, flora, and fauna. And when a Cuadibra is placed in a new environment, they catch on very quickly to the balance of the nature around them. Thanks to their extremely sensitive skin and taste, they're able to catalog new things they find with those that they already know of, and oftentimes a Cuadibra can make a close guess of a plant's properties just by touching its sap.

A Heart to Help

While most Cuadibra are hermits by nature, their hearts are always open to helping others, and this desire to help not only those they meet but the world around them can lead them off on daring adventures if given the right motivators and companions.

Other Notes

General
Their tails and headdresses are prehensile and often get used like hands.
Their ears can swivel around, lay flat, and hone in on noises like a cats.
It is speculated that they came from sea slugs and/or salamander-like creatures.
Their skin is very soft and moist-feeling to the touch.
They have skin patterns that range in gradients, spots, and stripes that can appear anywhere on their bodies, but the back will have some markings if no other markings are present.
Their canines are extremely sharp and a bit long.
They cannot breathe underwater. Their headdresses and tails absorb oxygen, which can sustain them underwater for a maximum of 180 minutes (3 hours).
Their tails and headdresses feel like their skin (soft and moist), but are also squishy and are extremely sensitive to changes in the environment around them (heat, cold, etc.).

Body and Reproduction
Since Cuadibra have a set of both male and female genitalia set internally, they have smaller stomachs, bladders, and lungs to compensate for this, thus requiring a large amount of food to sustain them as they "snack" throughout the days. The small lungs do not bother them near as much, since healthy Cuadibra receive much of their oxygen through the skin and cellular storage sacs in their tails and headdresses.
Cuadibra do, however, have a long gut tract, so they can eat just about anything. They also have a resistance to most poisons.
Also due to their hermaphroditism, Cuadibra wombs are very small. Their pregnancies last only three months, and after those three months are up, a baby only the size of the palm of their hand is born. Newborn Cuadibra are extremely helpless: their eyes are closed, their ears are small and folded over, their hands and feet are barely developed, and their headdresses and tails are very tiny (even tinier for those who will grow to have nubbed tails and/or headdresses). A newborn Cuadibra's best senses are touch and taste, and they will remain at their birther's breast constantly for a period of six months, slowly developing their hands, feet, headdress, tail, eyes, smell, and other senses. Their eyes will open at about a month after birth. After the six months have passed, Cuadibra babies operate like human six-month-olds, and the developmental track is near the same from then on out.

Society
On their home planet, they wear clothes next to none of the time.
Cuadibra, while they have the ability to travel the cosmos, often do not. There are no Cuadibra colonies, and it's uncommon for a Cuadibra to want to leave Ayowani.
Since most of the creatures on their planet are aquatic and exotic-looking, and the land creatures hunt in the water as well as on land, Cuadibra have competition with the practically all organisms around them. Some Cuadibra live entirely in the sea, dwelling on floating structures woven by generations of Cuadibrian hands, while others dwell on the beaches (the most common place to find the species) and beside lakes.
The entire society runs on a strong moral code, and those who wish to stray from it more often join thief guilds and head for other places than cause any ruckus. Becoming a murderer is practically unheard of.
They will always side with the environmentalists or those who seek peace in war. When wars do break out, they make like Switzerland and stay out of it.
Every Cuadibra is trained to defend themselves. Their entire species is a giant militia.
There isn't much of an economy, as the species operate as hunter-gatherers that barter and share among each other. They will export medical flora and fauna but not much else.
They have a species spokesperson that they send to assemblies. This person is re-chosen every 3-5 years by vote and is generally an older member of society.
They believe that as long as you take care of the planet, the planet will take care of you. Not much else.
While they live primitively on their own planet, this is only due to their respect of nature. They have space-ready vehicles that run on the energy-filled juices of the giant fungi of their planet, which produce thousands of tons of sap per month. In fact, before they harnessed this energy, the overflow of these mushroom's near-toxic (to any life form but them) sap was a major environmental conservation problem. Each community has several of these spacecraft, and many children grow up learning to build and maintain their own. Those that choose to live on other planets adapt to that planet's way of life, though their build spaceship will always remain special to them. Some even say that the Cuadibra even have a mental link to their spacecraft.

Cuadibra Traits

Your Cuadibra character has quite a few nifty abilities due to their specialized homeworld.

Amphibious

Your oxygen-absorbing tail and headdress allow you to "breathe" underwater for a maximum of 90 minutes, after which you will need to come to the surface or find some other pocket of air to reabsorb oxygen into them.

Learning Touch

Thanks to the many sensors on your soft skin, you can scan the chemical properties of an object and determine what that object could be used for.

Supple

Due to your species' superb maneuverability both underwater and on land, you have a proficiency in Agility.

Encumbered

Cuadibra are a race that do not wear clothes except when other races demand so at meetings. Because of this, wearing exceptionally heavy clothes causes you to feel more encumbered than other races might.

Warm-skinned

Because of Ayowani's warm climate, Cuadibra face serious damage if exposed to intense cold or to moderate cold for long periods of time.

Light-Wearer

Due to their homeland's lack of clothes, a Cuadibra feels most comfortable in light armor.

Siren's Song

Your voice has been called lulling by many, and whether it be like birdsong or a deadly siren's wail, you know how to use your words to get exactly what you want.

Sensitivity

While your superb ability to figure out the properties of something by taste ad touch is very helpful, you face the risk of becoming horribly poisoned by substances that may only cause a minor sickness in others.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 2.

Age

Cuadibra may start their lives off underdeveloped and helpless, but they reach maturity quickly (at about 18-20 years of age) and can live up to 340 years old. The average youngest age of death by old age is 250.

Alignment

As creatures of nature, Cuadibra tend to align with Good, though many may fall under Chaotic due to their sometimes unorthodox methods of keeping nature and their values protected. Evil-aligned Cuadibra are extremely rare if they are from Ayowani, but raised apart from the influences of their home culture, a Cuadibra can display as many confusing allegiances as any human being.

Size

Cuadibra can average anywhere from 5'8 to 8 feet tall. Your size is Large.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

Because of the deep depths with which your race can dive, you have superb color vision in the dimmest of areas, especially underwater areas.

Keen Senses

You have proficiency in the Perception skill.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Cuadibra. The language of the Cuadibra is a combination of body language via the tail and headdress and coos, clicks, and whistles. Cuadibra's speaking is often described as similar to the song of morning birds and dolphins. When a Cuadibra is angry, however, the tone of the noises is often described to be like a frog's.
