Homebrew Chloropholk Species Details

Unbothered and, quite literally, down-to-earth, the roots of Chloropholk trace their way back to the first forays of magic into the world.  They may be walking flora, but never think they can't see the forest for the trees; they stem from life itself and continue to share this deep connection.

Hidden Thoughts

Chloropholk are not cohesive beings insomuch as they are the product of a symbiotic relationship.  This mutually beneficial relationship allows the exterior plant matter to travel to the best locations and take in the world (and the sunlight) while providing protection for the mote of life at their core.  This "heart" derives from the world itself, a fractured piece of magical essence that would dissipate without a physical form.  Root-like veins connect this heart to the rest of its being, providing a circular flow of physical energy to and magical energy from the heart.

As pure energy, the hearts of Chloropholk do not age, but the plants around them feel the stresses of the world, whether it be the passage of time or natural disaster or intervention by other creatures.  The exterior plants may fall away and die.  In these events, the heart that resided within can find a new companion.

Green and Growing

Chloropholks are autotrophs!  They don't need to go out of their way to find food.  As what can be described as sentient plant creatures, they create the sugars they need through photosynthesis.  All they need is light and water, and they'll be as cool as cucumbers.

Chloropholks are at their most active when the sun is out and shining and take rainy days to sit back and relax.  However, prolonged droughts and floods are the bane of their existence.  Too much sunlight will dry out their protective exterior, and too much water will rot the veins to their heart.  The life of the Chloropholk is one of balance and adaptation.

The Chloropholk aren't deeply connected to permanent names, and they are even less concerned with the concept of gender.  Identity changes at will and does so quite often.  If they do chose a name along with their current identity, it will likely be something simplistic and monosyllabic.

Chloropholk Traits

Though many different variants exist, Chloropholk share a number of similar traits.

Ability Score Increase

Chloropholk take a spark of ancient magic and connect it with nature itself.  You have within you the combined wisdom of both of these forces, so yeah, you're budding with wisdom.

Age

Chloropholk don't have defined ages.  The sparks inside them originate from the beginnings of magic itself; defining such a thing is difficult and unnecessary.

Alignment

Chloropholk are inherently linked to the fate of the world around them, and they take threats to the world very seriously.  As such, they are often good- or neutral-aligned.  Evil-aligned chloropholk are somewhat rare and usually stem from plant species that thrive by choking out others.

Size

Chloropholk are as varied as the world around them.  Some derive from trees and can grow to more than 50 feet tall as they age.  Those derived from smaller plants tend to amass into a form that is no more than 4 feet tall.  Chloropholk can fill any size class so long as it is plausible for the plant.

Speed

You are plant matter with a magical core that grants the ability to travel great distances, but you're not going to move very fast in your travels.

Blindsight

Ok so, again, you are a plant.  Most plants don't have eyes, but your blindsight allows you to perceive your surroundings within 60 feet of you.

Autotroph

You never have to worry about finding food.  Instead, you only need access to water and light plus some good soil whenever possible.  You can buy food if you really want to, but you won't have a way to eat it (because you are a walking plant).

Natural Camouflage

Like plants, Chloropholk have adapted incredibly well to a specific terrain.  In areas similar to your native terrain, you will be able to navigate through and blend in with your surroundings more easily.

Environmental Awareness

As a being connected with the natural world, you are attuned to the world around you.  With this innate awareness, you have environmental expertise.  These could include having knowledge of the flora and fauna of the world (nature skill), conducting training with various creatures (animal handling skill), or gaining experience with rudimentary natural healing remedies (medicine skill).

Languages

So, technically, you cannot speak as other races can.  You are a plant; you have no vocal chords with which to speak physically.  However, the chloropholk's hearts are pure magic that allows them to communicate telepathically.  They can understand most languages and respond as well.  There's seldom any urgency when they speak unless the world itself is at stake.
