Homebrew Awakened Cat Species Details

Gifted with consciousness via magic, the awakened cat walks a narrow path between two worlds. They are forever removed from their animalistic life, but are still driven by many of their old instincts and experiences.

An awakened cat would think nothing of consuming the meat of a fallen foe. They have little need or want for most possessions, though all tend to have a few special items they guard fircely. They have a tendency toward warmth, shelter, and easy meals, though the promise of a warm lap and generous scratching behind the ears is good incentive as well.

Awakened Cat Traits

An awakened cat has half the hit points a humanoid would possess, though this is offset by their uncanny reflexes and speed.

Cat's Nature

As cats do not have hands, they are unable to hold items such as weapons or spell tomes. They can wear items, however, such as a spellcasting focus worn as a necklace.

In addition, cats are much less sturdy than humanoids, and therefore gain fewer hit points per level. Your hit dice change as follows:

d6 changes to d4.

d8 changes to d6.

d10 changes to d8.

d12 changes to d10.

Ability Score Increase

A cat's Dexterity increases by 4, and has a maximum of 24, and their Wisdom increases by 1. Their Strength decreases by 6.

Age

When awakened at birth, awakened cats mature more slowly than normal cats, reaching adulthood at 2. Drastically altered by magic, an awakened cat has a lifespan roughly equal to that of a human.

Awakened cats give birth in litters of 2 to 8, and each kitten has a 15% chance to be an awakened cat, even if only one of the parents is awakened.

Most awakened cats are neutral, taking little notice of anything beyond their own self interest.

Size

Cats can range in weights, often reaching between 7 and 15 pounds in adulthood. Your size is small.

Speed

A cat's base walking speed is 40 ft, and its climb speed is 30 ft.

Creatures of Magic

An awakened cat is created and sustained in part by magic. Any effect that suppresses magic, such as the Antimagic Field spell, temporarily strips away their conscious thought. Should they leave the area of effect or if the spell ends, they awaken with no memory of their time under the magic's influence.

If an effect that removes magic altogether, such as Dispel Magic, the cat must make a Wisdom saving throw against the caster's spell save DC. If the cat fails, it loses its conscious thought for one hour. The cat can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If the cat fails the DC by 10 or more, it cannot repeat the save, and suffers the effect for the full duration of one hour.

Darkvision

Cats have darkvision out to a range of 60 ft.

Cat's Alertness

Cats have exceptional senses, and gain expertise in the Perception skill.

Feline Grace

Cats gain proficiency in Acrobatics. In addition, an awakened cat can roll a Dexterity (Acrobatics) check to avoid fall damage. The DC for this check is equal to 10 or half the distance traveled.

Pounce

An awakened cat does not require a 10 ft running start to leap its maximum distance.

Languages

An awakened cat can understand and speak one language spoken by its creator. They cannot read or write, but can learn to read by taking the Linguist feat.
