Homebrew Bhaalspawn Species Details
Bhaalspawn mostly seemed like normal members of their race at first. Part of their souls were divine, however, and this would eventually reveal them, sometimes granting supernatural powers of different kinds but usually also tempting them to evil and murder. Individual reactions were very different, however. The personalities of individual Bhaalspawn were just as varied as those of other people, but they all had to deal with similar issues when their other side manifested itself. They could be from any race, and look completely normal unless they have awakened. They were often persecuted after being found out, so not many people are fond of them and often time they had to hide their identity. Being a child of Bhaal often drove them towards evil tendencies, though not all Bhaalspawn were evil. Some had other ideas than gaining power, had no such ambitious goals and might have even tried to do what was right, but reveled in bloodshed nevertheless. Yet other Bhaalspawn, such as Balthazar and Gorion's Ward, conquered their darker nature and acted selflessly, turning their divine power into something unlike its original nature. If the children were to ever meet each other, they would most definitely fight until one of them destroyed the other. If one was defeated, the essence of Bhaal scattered among them would have accumulated. As a side effect unintended by Bhaal, the Bhaalspawn's share of the essence meant that each of them had the potential to become a god in their own right. However, they had to acquire the rest of the essence.
Bhaalspawn Traits
Bhaalspawn would definitely know who they are, but other would not know unless they have awakened. Until that time, the would not gain any special traits or physical features. Once they have awakened, though, the possibilities of power are endless.Origin Race
The additional abilities of Bhaalspawn do not kick in until level 5. Until then, you look exactly like another race of your choice and no traits or bonuses from the Bhaalspawn race are added. Your languages, age, size, speed, and alignment are all found from the origin race that you pick.
Evil Tendency
Since your powers of Bhaal have awoken, you will be temped towards evil and murder. Depending on your Alignment, your reaction may be different. Some general alignments are:
Lawful Good: These feeling of crudeness disgust you, and you know they are wrong. They might affect your character for a short time, but should be able to get over these feeling within a day or two.
Lawful Neutral: Depending on your place of work or who you follow, you might falter and give into the evil thoughts (backgrounds will change this: do what you think your character will do). If your character gives in, your alignment will change to Lawful Evil. If not, it should take about 3-5 days for it to pass.
Lawful Evil: So long as your boss or deity didn't explicitly say "Do not kill", you will more than likely kill anyone possible. If they do however, you might be inclined to leave or denounce your deity for your murderous feelings
Neutral Good: You want to do the right thing in most cases, but sometimes things happen. You will struggle a little more getting over the urges to kill, but if you do so, it should subside within 4-5 days.
Neutral: Normally you wouldn't care what happens, but now you have a preference. It might take a little more time to fight off these feelings, but it would be easier to give in. If your character gives in, your alignment changes to Neutral Evil. If not, the urges should be gone in about a week or so.
Neutral Evil: Unless you do not serve or despise Bhaal, you should have no trouble following your gut and giving in. (if your character still tried to avoid killing with this alignment, you might change to Chaotic Evil.)
Chaotic Good: Your wild side is a little more rowdy than normal. Although you know what is right, your moral compass seems to be distorted. If you give in, change alignment to Chaotic Evil. If not, then your feelings should subside in about a week.
Chaotic Neutral: The voice in your head is louder than normal, driving you to follow what you want. You more than likely give in and your Alignment changes to Chaotic Evil. If you do not give in for very special reasons, these urges should stick with you for a few weeks or so.
Chaotic Evil: You probably are already killing people. You have no problem with this change.
Physical Adaptation
The awakening of Bhaalspawn is often times a painful and excruciating experience. Power pulsing through your body can do some crazy things to you. Scars, burn marks, and even lost pieces of flesh are common. Just as those are common, so are the opposite. Horns, scales, muscle build up, and many other things are just as common.
Power Surge
Cantrip, Ability Score increase? Figure this out. Tie it in with Physical Changes
Along with some physical elements being changed, your prowess comes out with it. Your power surge is tied hand in hand with physical adaptation and are based off of each other. You can take +1 to any ability score, or you may learn any cantrip. At levels 11, 15, and 18, the ability score goes up by one: you cannot change the category of these additional point though. Your cantrip will then turn into a level 1 spell, level 2 spell, and level 3 spell. You can cast the spell the same number of times as the level. The new spell must fall in line of the previous and follow the same method of casting. (Example: if you take frostbite and your eye has a blue scar that allows to cast it, your next spell must involve cold damage or frost and is casted the same way.)
