Homebrew Dragling (Dragonborn and Elf) Species Details

Proud Dragling Kin

Dragling look very much like dragons standing erect in humanoid form, though they lack wings. The first Dragling had scales of vibrant hues matching the colors of their dragon kin, but generations of interbreeding have created a more uniform appearance. Their small, fine scales are usually brass or bronze in color, sometimes ranging to scarlet, rust, gold, or copper-green. They are tall and strongly built, often standing close to 6½ feet tall and weighing 250 pounds or more. Their hands and feet are strong, talon like claws with three fingers and a thumb on each hand. Their hands and forearms glow. They have large horns that take any of a variety of shapes: some have curling horns like a ram, others have straight and tall horns like a gazelle’s, and some spiral upward like an antelopes’ horns. They have thick tails, four to five feet long, which lash or coil around their legs when they get upset or nervous. Their canine teeth are sharply pointed, and their eyes are solid colors—black, red, white, silver, or gold—with no visible sclera or pupil.

The blood of a particular type of dragon runs very strong through some Dragling clans. These Dragling often boast scales that more closely match those of their dragon ancestor—bright red, green, blue, or white, lustrous black, or gleaming metallic gold, silver, brass, copper, or bronze.

Self-Sufficient Clans

To any Dragling, the clan is more important than life itself. Dragling owe their devotion and respect to their clan above all else, even the gods. Each Dragling’s conduct reflects on the honor of his or her clan, and bringing dishonor to the clan can result in expulsion and exile. Each Dragling knows his or her station and duties within the clan, and honor demands maintaining the bounds of that position.

A continual drive for self-improvement reflects the self-sufficiency of the race as a whole. Dragling value skill and excellence in all endeavors. They hate to fail, and they push themselves to extreme efforts before they give up on something. A Dragling holds mastery of a particular skill as a lifetime goal. Members of other races who share the same commitment find it easy to earn the respect of a Dragling.

Though all Dragling strive to be self-sufficient,  they recognize that help is sometimes needed in difficult situations. But the best source for such help is the clan, and when a clan needs help, it turns to another Dragling clan before seeking aid from other races—or even from the gods.

Dragling Names

Dragling have personal names given at birth, but only speak those names to their family and clan. Outside the clan all Draglings go by the same name Drakkon.

Male Names: Unknown names have not left the clan ears

Female Names: Unknown names have not left the clan ears

Clan Names: Unknown clan names are secret from outsiders yet some how Draglings know which each clan they are from.

Dragling adult males were quite large, standing above the average height of most humans. They also possessed greater physical strength than most humanoids afforded to them by their advanced muscle and nervous system. Their sensory perception was acute, a feature that served well as the Dragling were an aggressive hunting species.

Female Draglings pursued male hunters in possession of rare or unique trophies acquired during a hunt. Women definitely have full control of their reproductive options, which means they chose the men, not the other way around. Females can only have two children in their life time.

Draglings are unique that each society separates into those that are of dragonborn and tiefling heritage or those that are dragonborn and elfs. Both have the same appearance except perhaps in the ears. It is unclear why elf heritage generates the same looks as those with tiefling heritage perhaps the elves magical history has a hidden secret.

Dragling (Dragonborn and Elf) Traits

Your draconic and elf heritage manifests in a variety of traits you share with other Draglings.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2,  Dexterity score increases by 2 Intelligence score by 1.

Age

Young Dragling grow quickly. They walk hours after being born, attain the size and development of a 10-year-old human child by the age of 3, and reach adulthood by 15. Once they reach adulthood they stop aging.

Alignment

Draglings tend to extremes, making a conscious choice for one side or the other in the cosmic war between good and evil. Most Draglings are good, but those who side with evil can be terrible villains.

Size

Draglings are taller and heavier than humans, standing well over 6 feet tall and averaging almost 250 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Draconic Ancestry

You have draconic ancestry. Choose one type of dragon from the Draconic Ancestry table. Your breath weapon and damage resistance are determined by the dragon type, as shown in the table.

Draconic Ancestry

Dragon Damage Type Breath Weapon
Black Acid 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Blue Lightning 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Brass Fire 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Bronze Lightning 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Copper Acid 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Gold Fire 15 ft. cone (Dex. save)
Green Poison 15 ft. cone (Con. save)
Red Fire 15 ft. cone (Dex. save)
Silver Cold 15 ft. cone (Con. save)
White Cold 15 ft. cone (Con. save)

Breath Weapon

You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Fey Ancestry

You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

Damage Resistance

You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.

Trance

Elves don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is “trance.”) While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common, Elvish and Draconic. Draconic is thought to be one of the oldest languages and is often used in the study of magic. The language sounds harsh to most other creatures and includes numerous hard consonants and sibilants. Elvish is fluid, with subtle intonations and intricate grammar. Elven literature is rich and varied, and their songs and poems are famous among other races. Many bards learn their language so they can add Elvish ballads to their repertoires.

Elf Weapon Training

You have proficiency with the longsword, shortsword, shortbow, and longbow.
