Homebrew Beastly Goblin Species Details

It is alleged that the goblins of ulthomel were created by a Green Hag attempting to create magical servants out of animal parts and magical ingredients and throwing them into a cauldron. However, this ritual backfired and the creatures that emerged had ideas of their own about the idea of indentured servitude. They murdered the hag and, through careful study of her grimoire (and many, MANY failures), they figured out how to perform the ritual and started to propagate their species on their own- eventually splitting off into multiple tribes with different ideals.

Goblins are created through a ritual where every member of the tribe contributes something to the pot, like a stew. Animal carcasses, plants, even shiny coins and gems or anything else that the goblin would like to contribute. The chaotic nature of this ritual and the countless things that could affect it means that every ‘batch’ of newborn goblins is a wholly unique individual.

While the ingredients of the stew can make a goblin’s personality vastly different, there are a few things that usually remain consistent. Goblins love to collect things, whether it be physical or abstract- worth fortunes or next to nothing. Each goblin generally has a niche (possibly as esoteric as collecting “stories” or “experiences”), but most like to collect coins, gems, or neat shaped rocks, though it’s usually something thrown into the stew that bonded with them. They also often have a personality that correlates with whatever type of animal they’re bonded with (If they are bonded with one at all).

A goblin’s appearance is as unique as a fingerprint, perhaps even moreso. Few things are consistent, such as their short stature and large ears, but that’s about it. If a goblin is bonded with an animal they’ll usually exhibit at least one trait of that animal, such as a lizard’s scaly skin, or a racoon’s bushy tail. Other times, however, a goblin may exhibit more unique traits. A tribe that throws a lot of crystals into the stew might get a Batch with skin covered in gemstones. Perhaps a goblin might come out of the pot with grass and leaves where they should have hair!

Beastly Goblin Traits

Goblins!

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Constitution or Charisma score increase by 1.

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Animalistic

Choose one of the following:

  • Crow’s Voice: You can mimic sounds you have heard, including voices. A creature that hears the sounds you make can tell they are imitations with a successful Wisdom (Insight) check opposed by your Charisma (Deception) check.
  • Lizardskin: You have tough, scaly skin. When you aren't wearing armor, your AC is 13 + your Dexterity modifier. You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC. A shield's benefits apply as normal while you use your natural armor.
  • Rabbit’s Luck: When you roll a 1 on an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you can reroll the die. You must use the new result, even if it is a 1.
  • Racoon Paws: You have advantage on all sleight of hand and stealth checks.

Nimble Escape

You can take the Disengage or Hide action as a bonus action on each of your turns

Fury of the Small

When you damage a creature with an attack or a spell and the creature's size is larger than yours, you can cause the attack or spell to deal extra damage to the creature. The extra damage equals your level. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
