Homebrew Voyari (Voidborn) Species Details

The Voyari, known as "Voidborn" in common tongue, are a race of beings that traveled to the world of the Forgotten Realms from another world a few decades ago. They are a rare and mysterious race, much of their history shrouded from the other races of the world. Until very recent memory, they were generally persecuted and mistrusted, considered aliens and monsters. Over time, they have slowly integrated into society, and in modern times they are accepted by most people. The modern day Voyari are known for their preference of solitude and quiet, but many have also earned a reputation as competent fighters and hunters.

Mysterious Beings

Being a new, foreign race to the Forgotten Realms, Voyari are instantly recognisable and stand out from a crowd. They are humanoid and slender in build and shape, possessing two long, slender arms, and stand on two legs. Voyari are relatively tall, ranging from 5 and a half feet tall to almost 7 feet, and they are lightly built, with most ranging from weights between around 80 pounds to around 200 pounds. They possess skin in shades and hues of blue, with the lightest being a light, pale blue, and the darkest being a deep navy blue. Most Voyari will have eyes that are green, grey or red in colour, but all colours of eyes do exist. They do not have hair, but instead possess thin, tentacle-like strands crowning their heads, some encircling, and some draping down, mimicking hair. These strands do vary in colour, with most Voyari possessing white, black or grey colourations, intermingled with streaks of electric blue that appeared as a result of attaining their strange, reality bending powers. Voyari would, under normal circumstances, live longer than races such as humans, but much shorter than races such as elves or dwarves, reaching adulthood in their mid to late 20's. Most would normally expect to live to almost two centuries, but using their reality bending powers accelerates the aging process, and as such many of the Voyari that are present in the Forgotten Realms today will expect to reach a century and not much more.

An Alien Society

The reason that the Voyari came to the Forgotten Realms was not out of curiosity or conquest, but out of necessity. Originally, the Voyari had no innate powers, and were a race of elven-like beings that inhabited the world of Aenelle; a plane of existence that was a safe paradise, with tall, dense forests, wide, warm oceans and open, luscious savannah. The Voyari lived in peace, ruled by a monarch, and supported by their ruling council of advisors. The Voyari were a pious society, and worshiped twin gods that represented the duality of all things; Solarun, the Mistress of light, peace, and prosperity, and Noctas, the Lord of shadow, war, and ruin. They also worshiped a third god, Neusariff, who represented the space between and outside of light and dark, as well as principles not inherent of good or bad, examples of such principles being justice, weather and nature, as well as intelligence and learning.

The Dying Wish

These gods were all worshiped equally, each having their own dedicated followers, temples and priests, and all vied  for the affections of the majority of the Voyari people, but none of them managed to gain that majority. That is, until the event known to the Voyari as "The Cataclysm". The very mention of this event will provoke feelings of despair, regret or shame in the different types of Voyari present in the world today. The Cataclysm occurred when a member of the council of advisors, a mage named Evedere, overthrew the former king, Sandro the Unseen, and became the monarch himself. As the ruler, Evedere called on the masses to embrace the teachings of the Lord of Shadow, and Noctas' power grew considerably. He became emboldened, using his new-found power to send a bolt of corruption that transformed Evedere into his Ruinous Champion. Evedere the Ruined, as he would come to be known to the Voyari survivors, began to massacre the followers of Solarun and Neusariff, gathering cultists and gaining increased powers from Noctas the more he slaughtered. At the peak of his power, Evedere mounted an offensive on the very gods themselves, Solarun and Neusariff. In the culmination of that heinous offensive, the gods of light and space became trapped, with the Ruinous Champion breaching their domain. In a final act of cowardice, the god of space used his dwindling powers to open a rift and escape to another plane, abandoning Solarun to her fate. As the Champion of Noctas slew her, the former Mistress of Light made a wish with her dying breaths; a wish to annihilate the lands of Aenelle with a blight of unending frost, and to allow the Voyari of the Aenelle to flee the plane in the same way that Neusariff had. Such was the strength of that wish, a wish uttered from the final breaths of a god, that it came to be. In that instant, the remaining Voyari gained the ability to transcend reality and flee the destruction of their home. The destruction was neither slow nor painless, and many of the Voyari succumbed to the blight set upon the world. So too, did the followers of shadow, Evedere himself included. These refugees were scattered amongst the very planes of reality, never to return to their home. And so it came to be that some of the survivors of the annihilation came to belong to a new world, a new reality.

A New Way of Living

Those Voyari that managed to make it to the Forgotten Realms had to adapt quickly. They were strangers in a strange land, where every eye became scrutinous and every mouth whispered warning behind closed doors. At first they hid, finding refuge in the wilds of the world, but they soon began to integrate themselves into society. Many found homes alongside the other races in metropolitan areas, where they could easily blend in with the larger variety of people. They quickly found employment as hunters, mercenaries and assassins, using their powers to stalk their targets, whether they be a creature or a person. The Voyari tend to keep their culture and former ways of living to themselves, or perhaps family and close friends, instead choosing to adopt and adapt to other races' ways of living. Most Voyari have become worshipers of the gods of the Forgotten Realms, trying to forget their gods of old. However, a few of the oldest Voyari still worship and revere those old gods of light, dark, and space, using them as a lesson learned to create a better future for themsleves.

Voyari Names

Voyari forenames are split up into three groups; those that keep their old names, those who have adopted new names and use both, and those born in the Forgotten Realms, and thus have only a newer style of name. The Voyari also have no changes to names dependent on gender, and no gender-specific names, which is true for both old and new Voyari names.

Old names were given to Voyari in early childhood, instead of at birth, and have meanings derived from the original Voyari language. These names are given in relation to an achievement that the Voyari gained early in their lives. These names are used more as titles than as actual names, with the main referral for a Voyari being their family name (Surname). For example, a Voyari child could be given the name "Rybrakra" (meaning: Of the water) if they caught a fish in their early childhood.

Old Voyari names: Vilotorz, Svalakski, Radzmirok, Wieslawvek, Voczechska, Tzadeusz, Kingadra, Witoldac, Joziavz, Kulabva, Szymoniz, Kackapa, Kczecha, Taroslaw, Antarak, Urszatza, Mirekyz, Vatrek, Rybrakra.

New names are often based on older style Voyari names, altered to remove complicated pronunciations or better understanding from other races. For example, the name "Urszatza" (meaning: Inquisitive), will become the name "Ursat" for easy pronunciation .Those that choose to use both their old and new names will string them together, with their new name coming first, and their old name used as a middle name.

New Voyari names: Vilo/Vilot, Svala, Radmir, Wiesla, Vochek, Tadeus, Gadra, Witol, Joz/Jozia, Kulab, Symon, Kacka, Cheka, Taros, Antra, Ursat, Mirek, Vater, Rybra.

Voyari surnames are derived from the combination of a Voyari's parents' surnames, with one part of the word coming from each of the child's parents' family names, regardless of whether or not those parents are engaged in matrimony, a relationship, or otherwise. For example, a father with the surname "Vadarska" and a mother with the surname "Rezdtrek" would give their child the surname "Vadatrek". These parent names vary greatly, with a child having a completely different surname to that of their parents, but in a way that their lineage can still be traced through generations without too much difficulty.
