Homebrew Child of an Oni Species Details
Deep where nightmares are made and where the air is thin and acidic and the winds howl in pain — dwell the violent and warmongering Oni. Few folk can claim to have seen a Oni, and fewer still can claim to have survived a confrontation with them. Oni wander a bleak realm of darkness, death, and fire. Their bodies look as if they are formed from fear and embers and give them great physical power. Their hearts are infused with the fire to conquer and kill and as do their children, the children of Oni live their life with the horrific ideals of their parents while trying to live a human life, the words of their ancestors telling them of evil while their desire to do good battles within themselves. This conflict however is settled on their 20th birthday where they are forced to either fall into darkness or claw their way to the light.
Driven Desire
Every day brings a challenge to the child of an Oni. Every single one of them have a goal, an undying one that forces them to push on, some have tangible goals while some have violent ones but each one burns in their heart and pushes them to complete it no matter the odds
Goliaths thus place a premium on self-sufficiency and individual skill. They have a compulsion to keep score, counting their deeds and tallying their accomplishments to compare to others. Goliaths love to win, but they see defeat as a prod to improve their skills.
This dedication to competition has a dark side. They are ferocious competitors, but above all else they are driven to outdo their past efforts. If one slays a dragon, he or she might seek out a larger, more powerful wyrm to battle. Few reach old age, as most die attempting to surpass their past accomplishments.
Survival of the Fittest
Among Oni, any adult who can’t contribute to the clan is expelledor killed. A lone Oni has little chance of survival, especially an older or weaker one. Onis' have little pity for adults who can’t take care of themselves, though a sick or injured individual is treated, as a result of the Oni concept of fair play.
A permanently injured Oni is still expected to pull his or her weight in the tribe. Typically, such a Oni dies attempting to keep up.
