Homebrew Atlantean Species Details
Atlanteans? No such thing according to some folk. Others, like me and the other captains, we know better. Hide in plain sight they do though, can't tell them apart until your ship I sinking.
Originally a secluded and secretive race. Only recently did they start to surface, and only thanks to the persistent pestering of the other water races. Drawn out now and willing to aid those in need with its techniques and magics only known to them.
Deep Isolation
Millennium ago, Atlantis left the world in an attempt to prevent war. The people of Atlantis decided to leave only because they grew tired of war, not because they couldn't take on the forces of the surface world. They had some of the most advanced techniques for weapons and powerful magics. Better to save the rest of the world and have them think they were lost. So they sunk there golden pearl of a city, diving deep down to the ocean bed.
There the atlanteans remained, untouched and unknown by the surface with exception of the myths. Their powerful magic sealing the peoples fate. The magic itself took a turn, allowing them to not just survive under water but to become one with it.
Now as time has passed the command of the people has changed hands. Hoping that the above world is no longer power hungry as it once was they are starting to step out and searching for worthy allies.
Old as the Oceans
Atlanteans have been gone for so long that they have forgotten what the Surface world is like. Most of their assumptions are from old tales and incomplete histories. While they may look human, they act differently simply not understanding the surface ways at first. But they are by no means uncivilized.
Like any great civilization they have nobility among them and those of common blood as well. The noble families can trace their linage back to before most established current bloodlines of the surface world. This gives some of them an ideology that they are better than the life above them.
A Living Myth
Gone from the surface world for thousands of years and only now just resurfacing. The very few of them who do resurface officially are in pairs and on orders of their king. Usually on a recon mission or insertion into a foreign powers ranks. Unofficially the rest are criminals escaping from abyssal prisons or homesteaders looking for a new break in life. The secrecy of their people and the unlikelihood of a surface appearance makes them hard to come by.
Atlantean Personality
An old and proud race, these people usualy see themselves above the surface dwellers commoner and nobility alike. Despite that they have a tendency to still treat them with respect, for they are ignorant to who you really are.

Your base walking speed is 30 feet, and you have a swimming speed of 40 feet.

The old deep magics that saved your people gave you some control over the water itself.

You can communicate simple ideas with beasts that can breathe water. They can understand the basics of your thoughts, but nothing complicated. You can occasionally get emotions back.

Because of the old magics and the time your people have spent under water you have adapted to even the most extreme ocean depths, you have resistance to cold damage, and you ignore any of the drawbacks caused by a deep, underwater environment and gain dark vision.
