Homebrew Atlantian Species Details

Atlantians are one of the oldest races, some believe that humans even evolved from Atlantians. Due to their elusive and private nature however they have had a very minor role in most historic events, preferring to remain below the surface holding grudges than engaging in war or politics.

A Closed World

Most Atlantians live in the closed off underwater city of Atlantis. They very rarely travel or integrate with other species and for this reason are all incredibly similar. They range from about 5'7" to slightly over 6' and age at the same rate as humans until their 30s at which point they age at a similar rate to elves. Due to this they reach maturity in their late teens but are not given major societal roles until their 30s. Atlantians for the most part look human apart from a few distinguishing traits.  Their skin tends to be more cool toned though varies in shade, and appears slightly thicker and smoother to that of a human. They also have slightly webbed fingers and toes, slightly pointed ears and gills on the side of their necks to breath through. In later years it is also common for fine scales to appear similarly to how wrinkles do on humans. For the most part Atlantians are extremely attractive in an off putting way with a slender yet muscular build, sharp features, long fingers and eyes that don't appear to have a separate pupil and iris.

 

Proud Society

Atlantians are proud to a fault. They live in a  mostly matriarchal society with a single ruler who trains a randomly selected child to be her predecessor. Work and rewards are shared evenly among the entire society and there is a strong belief that you should not break from this social structure.  Atlantians believe themselves to be the better race with an exception to high elves and teiflings. They tend to remain separate from all earthly wars and political matters and do not even strongly defend their own borders, instead being spiteful and not saying anything. Despite this apparent rigidness and sulky nature among their own kind they are a very optimistic and artistic society. All meals are eaten outdoors as a community and due to their small numbers they have a strong sense of family with all other Atlantians. They have their own unique styles of music, art, architecture and literature and can be incredibly romantic people. they are fiercely loyal, gentle and introspective.

 

 

 

Lasting Civilization

according to their mythology Atlantians have remained in Atlantis since the worlds formation. The city is incredibly ancient and rather than expanding Atlantians use time and material to keep the city in perfect condition. Most building are built from mother of pearl reflecting the sunlit waves from above onto every surface. Atlantians have a strong sense of home and most would rather die than leave their city.

 

 

Atlantian Names

Due to such a small tight knit community Atlantians do not have a need for last names unless interacting with land dwellers when they simply say "of Atlantis". Their names tend to be short (usually one syllable) and unisex.

Spells

Atlantians have the ability to manipulate water into different shapes. They cannot create or destroy water but they can move it anyway they choose.

Darkvision

Due to a life lived mostly in the depths of the ocean Atlantians can see up to 60ft in dim or dark environments as if they were brightly lit. Unlike gnomes, they can discern color with darkvision. 

Water breathing

Atlantians have gills which allow them to breathe underwater for any period of time without any adverse effects.

 Your ability scores each increase by 1.

Age

Atlantians age similarly to humans until they reach their 30's when their aging slows to that of an elf. They typically reach adult hood in their late teens but are exempt from most responsibilities until they reach their 30s. They can live up to 500 years but many choose to die earlier and this is an excepted part of society.

Alignment

Atlantians tend to be lawful or true neutral though their are some very rare exceptions

Size

Atlantian size is Medium. They tend to range in height from around 5'7" to just over 6" with very slender, muscular builds.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet, and swimming speed 60ft

Languages

Atlantians speak their own language Aquan to each other but most also know common and primordal.
