Homebrew Alisian Species Details

Alisians are from the land called Alisium. Alisium is the hub of the human world. For centuries the humans of Django struggled for simple survival. But over the last few centuries humans matured, expanded and began exploring. Alisium is at the center of this expansion, not only because of its profitable lands, great sea and mild climate but also because of a technology advancement called bright oil.

Church of Alisium

The great Church of Alisium has existed for untold centuries, perhaps millennia.  The Church is credited with saving Alisium from the misty ages and restoring hope to humanity. For untold centuries humans suffered through a period of obscurity and decline. Technology and institutionalized learning were largely unknown. The heartless world of Django with its Blinding Dark charged with murderous devils had all but eliminated the human spirit.

In the heart of Alisium the Reasonists of the Church developed a new technology called bright oil. It was distilled from the black oils of tar pits yet itself is a clear liquid, nearly invisible. Bright oil will not ignite with flame or spark but only with an arc from a rare stone. If lit at normal times its flame is hardly visible, even in the dark. But during the Blinding Dark it is a flashing flame that cuts the darkness. With it humans can see. With sight their fear is diminished. Those who gathered around flames of bright oil do not wither in the Blinding Dark.

Reasonists

Reasonists refer both to those who follow the ethical system and also to the priests of the Church of Alisium. The Reasonist’s ethics and ideals are the dominant belief for the people of Alisium. Their ideal is to combine inquisitiveness and study with caring, compassion and understanding. Reasonists  seek to work or research for the greater good and desire to be good role models.

In Alisium, state power resides with the Church, its leader the “Apostle” and its “Cardinals.” The Cardinals act as a Senate, advising and governing. Reasonists clergy are well respected and often sought after for opinion or advise. They tend to be approachable and friendly. Many are remarkable medics and healers. But some Reasonists who are accepted into the inner hierarchy of the Church become more than just smart, compassionate do-gooders. The most devoted and persistent of the Reasonists are capable of great miracles and  wield a fierce power.

It is an extreme honor to be a member of the ordained clergy of the Church of Alisium. The Church is finicky about membership into its central hierarchy.  Those who are ordained have many opportunities of science and research opened up for them, as well as government and community service. The clergy is not restricted to men or women, or race it is open to all of the candidates and includes Alisians, Tokins, and Lochmorians

If you thought like a Reasonist

Your God is unknowable. It can only be found through search, study and science. Your faith is in the universe itself and your mission is to unlock its secrets for the benefit of all. You are not an Atheist, no. Powers, mysterious entities, devils, spirits,  and nature are all around. There is life. There is more than life. The voice from the ineffable universe whispers in your ear a song of hope. You believe that through study the universe could be understood. Alas, it is infinite and can never be wholly known. But the journey itself is the goal, not a destination at the end.

Inquisitors

Inquisitors are the military leaders of the Church of Alisium and the dominant fighting force of the domain. Local regions have soldiers under an Elderman (local ruler), but formal wars are led by the Inquisitors.

The Inquisitors are so named from an ancient institution where Elderman would come together in a council to investigate wrong doings and settle a peace. In Alisian parlance, the term is not viewed as excessively harsh. Quite the opposite, Inquisitors are revered and respected.

Conscription is mandatory in Alisium, so training in warfare starts at around the age of twelve. The greatest warriors from local regions with the biggest hearts, intelligence and charisma are sought after by the Church.

The greatest of these warriors with the purest hearts and minds become true heroes and can wield the same power as the Reasonist priests.
