Homebrew Banished Species Details
The Banished are a curious race. Known by many names, including The Chained, The Damned, and even the Broken ones. Legend has it that long ago, the banished were a great group of humans from another realm. The humans crossed paths with a great evil, who attempted to banish to another realm. Unbeknownst to the evil however, the humans had undergone a special ritual, intended to chain them firmly to their home. The Evil's power was enough to force them out, but remnants of their chaining ritual remain.
Remnants of the Chain
Banished are able to briefly separate their essence from their body, through a seemingly impossible by-product of the spell cast upon their people. This usually manifests in a form unto a ghost. During this phase, the Banished are incorporeal, but are chained to very plane around them, preventing them from moving. This can come in handy, as a trapped banish might be able to remain incorporeal for days until a rescue party arrives, not requiring food or drink. The mental strain caused by the process prevents it from going on too long however.
Unseen Curse
Banished usually appear to be normal humans, and as such often mingle with them. The child of a banished possesses the ability to become incorporeal as well. However, without knowledge of this ability, they lack the mental muscles necessary to activate it, and as such remain carriers of the curse. The child of a carrier also possesses the ability, and sometimes generations go by without a family realizing they contain banished blood.
