Homebrew Arcadian Species Details

In a plane long dead once beautiful — a wasteland where there was once a beautiful autumnal world — lived the Arcadians. Few folk can claim to have seen an Arcadian, and fewer still can claim friendship with them. Arcadians wander the material plane hoping to one day restore their society. Their bodies look as if they are carved from slate and give them great physical power. They seek power and knowledge that could rebuild their world. Their hearts are imbued with the memory of a home long lost by the greed of the powerful, leaving each Arcadian with the responsibility to further their lineage or die trying.

A Timeless Perspective

Arcadians can live well over 1800 years, giving them a broad perspective on events that might trouble the shorter-lived races more deeply. They are more often amused than excited, and more likely to be curious than greedy. They tend to remain aloof and unfazed by petty happenstance. When pursuing a goal, however, whether adventuring on a mission or learning a new skill or art, Arcadians can be focused and relentless. They are slow to make friends and enemies, and even slower to forget them.

Like the branches of a young tree, Arcadians are flexible in the face of danger. They don't trust in diplomacy to resolve differences before they escalate to violence. When the need arises, Arcadians reveal a stern martial side, demonstrating skill with sword, hammer, and strategy.

Survival of a Society

As Arcadia was killed by the gods the wise inhabitants fled the dying realm. However, after the plane had died the inhabitants that survived went their own ways sticking with family groups with hopes of one day returning together as a society. Goliaths have little pity for adults who can’t take care of themselves, though a sick or injured individual is treated, as a result of the goliath concept of fair play.

A permanently injured goliath is still expected to pull his or her weight in the tribe. Typically, such a goliath dies attempting to keep up, or the goliath slips away in the night to seek the cold will of fate.

In some ways, the Arcadian's drive to outdo themselves and further their culture leads to their decline and death. An arcadian would much rather die in battle furthering the existence of their lineage than endure the slow decay of their society.

Arcadian Names

Every arcadian has three names: a birth name assigned by the newborn’s eldest living relative, an icon name which the individual chooses, and a family or clan name. A birth name is held at the highest esteem. Clan names are the remnants of an Arcadians ancestors' position in society. An arcadian will do anything to retain the honor and lineage of their clan name.

An arcadian's icon name is a description that can change on the whim of the arcadian. It refers to a notable deed, either a success or failure, committed by the arcadian. Arcadians assign and use icon names with their friends of other races, and change them to refer to an individual’s notable deeds.

Arcadians present all three names when identifying themselves, in the order of birth name, icon name, and clan name. In casual conversation, they use their birth name.
