Homebrew Arachnomorph (Spiderfolk) Species Details

Arachnomorphs (or as they're also called, Spiderfolk) are dwellers of either the deeper areas of the jungle or the darkest corners of the underdark. Their skin is usually either white, grey, or a faded blue green or purple in color. For unknown reasons, Spiderfolk don't have a language of their own, and instead speak in Thieves' cant. Aside from the skin, the most strikingly different feature from Spiderfolk to humans would be their eyes and arms. Spiderfolk have between 2 and 8 eyes on their head, but the best teller is the pupils, which are either massively dilated or small and hard to see, with practically no in-between. Spiderfolk always have 6 arms, but through magical means, they can absorb the lower two pairs into their body, resulting in them vanishing. Small, fine, dark hairs cover the wrist and hands of Spiderfolk, resulting in their wrists and hands being a much darker color to the rest of their body. A strange pattern is that Spiderfolk have black hair 100% of the time, which is a little strange. Like spiders, Spiderfolk produce a silk like substance from their bodies in a specialized organ attached to the back and center of the Spiderfolk's spine. This silk is released from a small opening in the center of their back. When fresh, the silk is quite sticky, which they take advantage of. They do this with those hairs on their hands and wrists. They use this silk to weave many things, from clothes to banners, and even the very buildings they live in. As a race, Spiderfolk are quite pacifistic, avoiding confrontation whenever they can. Despite being likely the best creators of clothes and rope of any race, they usually stay out of urban areas because most races dislike them. This hatred towards Spiderfolk by so many races has no known cause, but some believe that is stems from the ancestors of the Spiderfolk race, whoever or whatever they may be.

Arachnomorph (Spiderfolk) Traits

Spiderfolk are a race with great diversity between individual members of their race, but there are common traits.

Ability Score Increase

Spiderfolk are often characterized by either their haste to get out of a fight, or the dexterity they show when either forced to fight or just weaving things from their silk. Spiderfolk are usually quite scrawny, having a -1 to strength, but can dance around the trees like there's no tomorrow, having a +2 to dexterity. Spiderfolk are also good with talking, having a +2 to charisma.

Age

Spiderfolk are very human like in terms of life span. Spiderfolk reach adulthood at around age 16 and usually live for about 100 to 120 years.

Alignment

Though many of the races that dislike Spiderfolk (especially Elves and Dwarves) see them as evil forest tricksters who will rob you bind, steal your wife, and then murder you, Spiderfolk are almost never like that. Spiderfolk are usually more chaotically aligned, but they are almost never evil. They usually skew towards chaotic good or chaotic neutral, though neutral good or true neutral wouldn't be much of a stretch either.

Size

Spiderfolk continue to be very human like with their size, usually being within the area between 5 ft and 6 ft tall. They are also quite light and scrawny, usually being between 80 to 100 lbs.

Speed

One of the most spider like things about the Spiderfolk is their movement. Spiderfolk have a grounded movement speed of 30 ft, but they can climb just as fast.

Adapted Environment

Though the differences between the Spiderfolk of the Underdark and the Spiderfolk of the Jungle were not dubbed great enough make either be subraces, they still have differences. Spiderfolk of the Underdark have a venomous bite, darkvision, and a resistance to Necrotic damage, at the cost of sunlight sensitivity. Spiderfolk of the Jungle Don't have a venomous bite, can't be charmed, have a resistance to poison damage, but are extra weak to fire.

Web Walker

When a Spiderfolk moves on web based difficult terrain, they do not get a movement penalty. They also can't get snared by webbing. When Spiderfolk move on webbing their movement speed is doubled, and they get advantage on attacks against enemies in web based difficult terrain.

Natural Born Weaver

Spiderfolk can produce silk from their bodies at will. A Spiderfolk gets 100 ft of silk per long rest. This silk is a very versatile substance that you can create things with. To do these activities, you have to pass a Dexterity Check of varying DC. There is also variety in they types of action these are. As you level up you learn to use your silk in more and more ways. Bellow is the full list of options you have, including silk cost, DEX check DC, the type of action and the level you gain the ability.

  • Rope Creation: 50 ft silk; DC 5; Action; Level 1
  • Silk Mending: 5 ft silk; DC 10; Bonus Action; Level 1
  • Mask Craft: 10 ft silk; DC 17; Action; Level 5
  • Woven Hut: 100 ft silk; DC 17; Action; Level 15

Two Notes: 1. The only reason all these actions say their cool down is long rest is because that is what refills your silk, you can use these until you can't afford to anymore. 2. Only one of the items you can craft can be sold, that being the rope, since it is just normal Silken rope.

Skitter

As a Spiderfolk, you know that combat is far from your strong suit, and as such, you can disengage as a bonus action to get out of danger safely.

Languages

Spiderfolk are fluent in an odd set of languages, speaking both common, and in place of a native tongue, thieves' cant. At level three, depending on what kind of spiderfolk you are, you can choose to learn a third language from a certain selection.
