Homebrew Axostome Species Details
History
Axostomes used to be great allies of the salamanders, back when they lived in the Elemental Plane of Fire. They were commonly the underdogs and gofers for the greater amphibians, who would go fight whilst the axostomes dealt only with reconnaissance and licking the boots of their superiors. Their squishy bodies, though regenerative, made them fear harm. The salamanders despised their weakness but tolerated them for the most part. This all changed when an upset in power allowed a polemic leader to rise in the salamander ranks. This new leader rallied the salamanders against all they perceived to be weak. As such, the axostomes were not spared. They ran for their lives as their skin burned from the pursuing onslaught of the salamanders. Ousted from the Plane of Fire, some axostomes found their new homes in the Plane of Water. Others fell to Prime.
In these new environments, they nursed their wounds in the new substance, which was water. With water, they came to realize a new potential and evolved, as this liquid invigorated them in ways the Plane of Fire never did. However, they were too spineless to ever seek revenge. Instead, most just live in their damp new environments, forever nursing their horrific memory of the slaughter of their race.
Society
Most axostomes don't enjoy being around others, even their own kind, always fearful of danger. They don't enjoy conflict, despite their regeneration, as both the damage and the regrowing shows years after the conflict that caused both. However, certain axostomes decide to leave their cowering lifestyle in order to better protect themselves in case something unexpected were to happen, though this often leads to learning better ways to simply hide. These sometimes venture out in the world and travel solo, usually being hermitic sages.
