Homebrew Chirot Species Details

Elusive little creatures, the Chirot are a small-sized bat-like race. Misunderstood much like some other humblefolk in the Wood, Chirot still have a long way to go to earn respect among the folk of the Wood. It is not their attitudes that have made them seem untrustworthy, as they are some of the most loyal friends one can make, but the misconception that they hunt humblefolk and ravage farms. In truth, they are some of the most social humblefolk, seeking friends and creating long lasting family units.

Past Misdeeds

Though many Chirot say that there was no time in which they hunted other folk and stole resources, many know the truth: the Chirot were enemies of the Wood. An insular idea of keeping their own families closest led them to viewing the rest of the Wood as mere food. It wasn’t until a very brave-- or very lonely-- Chirot made friends with other folk that they realized they were missing out on the great joy of a Wood-wide community.

Very Best Friends

Once a Chirot finds themselves comfortable, it is unheard of for them to keep secrets. They are constantly around the people they care about, only leaving when they absolutely must and returning as fast as they are able. A lone Chirot is one looking for company or helping the family and friends they are currently separated from. This mindset makes them exceptionally valuable allies when traversing the Wood: you’ll never find yourself alone if you take a Chirot along.

Alternate Apperance

Much like every race of the Wood, the Chirot have varied shapes and sizes. This entry is inspired by the appearance of smaller bats-- horseshoe, funnel-eared, and false vampire bats-- but a larger bat species would also work for visual inspiration.

Chirot Traits

Chirot generally share the following traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Age

Chirot age at a rate similar to Jerbeen, reaching maturity around 8 years. They have slightly longer lifespans, however, living to the ages of 50 or 60 on average.

Alignment

Chirot are not the most imposing species in the Everden, particularly for one so well suited to the night. Because of this Chirot tend to be cautious yet empathetic and tend towards good alignments. Avoiding most conflict, and thus hard stances, they tend to be Neutral as well.

Size

Chirot have generally small and light bodies, standing between 2 and 3 feet tall and weighing between 15 and 35 pounds. Your size is Small.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Glide

Using your winged arms, you can slow your fall, and glide short distances. When falling you can use your reaction to spread your arms, stiffen your leather wings, and slow your descent. While doing so, you continue to fall gently at a speed of 60 feet per round, taking no fall damage when you land. If you would fall at least 10 feet in this way, you may fly up to your movement speed in one direction you choose, although you cannot choose to move upwards, landing in the space you finish your movement. You cannot glide while carrying heavy weapons or wielding a shield (though you may drop any held items as part of your reaction to spread your arms). You cannot glide while wearing heavy armor, or if you are encumbered.

Darkvision

You are adept at hunting under the cover of night. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Echolocation

As an action, you emit a short burst of high-pitched noise, audible up to 60 feet away, but perceptible only to bats, other chirot, creatures with a keen hearing trait, or creatures with a passive Perception of 17 or higher. Until the end of your next turn, you have a blindsense to a distance of 30 feet.

Keen Hearing

You have advantage on checks you make with the Wisdom (Perception) or Intelligence (Investigation) skills that rely on hearing.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Birdfolk and one extra language of your choice. Chirot typically speak one of the languages of the Humblefolk, with whom they often do trade with.
