Homebrew Batra Species Details

We had a Batra traveler come in to the tavern from North of the Wood a few years back. They were gone by the time the morning sun had risen, but the fact I remember them was because of the peculiar way they slept. Instead of sleeping in a bed, they hung upside down on the ceiling by their feet! Must be a weird custom of theirs...

Batra are a bat-like race, with dark fur, pointy fangs, and membraned wings. They are rarely seen in the Wood and are usually kept at arm's reach to both birdfolk and humblefolk societies alike. It is hard to say if batra would be a great ally or a dreadful enemy when traveling, especially on the darkest nights.

Broody but Social

Batras are intimidating to those that have never talked to one, but tend to be quite open to social interactions when given the chance. Some may consider them more broody than not, but batras tend to think of themselves as "realists" when about how to handle many of life's choices. They tend to either be alone, or in large groups when traveling. The more people in their social circle, the friendlier a batra is. This friendliness is usually shown in unconventional ways, such as watching over friends while they sleep or trying to accomplish tasks for allies on their own even when having help would be more beneficial.

Night Stalkers

One of the traits batras are most well-known for is their ability to detect objects without vision, but using their specialized hearing instead. Batras are quite good at searching at night due to their echolocation and keen hearing. When hunting for food or scouting for threats, batras tend to have the advantage at night as they are undeterred by darkness. It is considered quite a feat to surprise a batra at night.

Batra reach adulthood at around 18 years. They can live anywhere between 70 to 100 years.

If you would fall at least 10 feet in this way, you may fly up to your movement speed in one direction you choose, although you cannot choose to move upwards, landing in the space you finish your movement. You cannot glide while carrying heavy weapons or wielding a shield (though you may drop any held items as part of your reaction to spread your arms). You cannot glide while wearing heavy armor, or if you are encumbered.
