Homebrew Darkling Species Details
Ancient legends speak of a seelie fey who betrayed the Summer Queen. His true name has been stricken from history, but the stories call him Dubh Catha (“Dark Crow” in Common). So great was the Summer Queen’s wrath that she cursed every member of his house. Other fey refer to the descendants of Dubh Catha’s house as the dubh sith — or, in Common, “darklings.” Darklings most often settle in secluded caverns and chambers beneath the towns of other species. From such enclaves, they quietly ply their trade as thieves and assassins.
Darkling Traits
Darklings most often settle in secluded caverns and chambers beneath the towns of other species. From such enclaves, they quietly ply their trade as thieves and assassins.Ability Score Increase
Your Dexterity score increases by 2.
Age
Although elves reach physical maturity at about the same age as humans, the elven understanding of adulthood goes beyond physical growth to encompass worldly experience. An elf typically claims adulthood and an adult name around the age of 100 and can live to be 750 years old. Darklings are most likely to succumb to The Killing Light by age 40, but those that undergo the Elder Transformation may live as long as their elven kin.
Alignment
Despite their curse, darklings retain a fondness for the beauty of art, so they lean strongly toward the gentler aspects of chaos. A darkling might risk taking a peek at a sunset or lighting a tiny candle to glimpse the colors in a painting or a jewel.
Size
Darklings range from under 3 to over 4 feet tall and have slender builds. Your size is Small.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision
You have superior Darkvision, you can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Blindsight
Accustomed to avoiding light for fear of death, you have limited Blindsight. You can see in total darkness up till 30 feet. You can’t discern the presence or absence of shapes.
Light Sensitivity
While in bright light, the you have disadvantage on attack rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.
Keenly Cunning
You have proficiency in the Perception and [/skill]Stealth[/skill] skills.
The Killing Light
The Summer Queen’s curse causes a darkling’s body to absorb light, and doing so wizens the creature, much like the effect of rapid aging. For this reason, darklings cover every part of their body with clothing when exposure to light is a risk. The light a darkling absorbs over the course of its lifetime explodes outward when the darkling dies, incinerating the creature and much of its possessions.
When the darkling dies, nonmagical light flashes out from it in a 10-foot radius as its body and possessions, other than metal or magic objects, burn to ash. Any creature in that area and able to see the bright light must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of the creature’s next turn, Charisma is your modifier for this effect.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and Sylvan. Sylvan is fluid, with subtle intonations and intricate grammar. Sylvan literature is rich and varied, and is closely related to the Elvish language.

Posted Jul 26, 2020I think Blindsight and proficiency in Perception and Stealth may be a bit too strong mechanically (Blindsight can certainly be abused by players) you've kept it fairly simple overall, which is a plus in my book.

Posted Dec 21, 2020Their blindsight is only 30 feet, and have -2 dex and no plus to other attributes which I think is a pretty brutal disadvantage. However, I also made a feat specific for them.
