Homebrew Soratami (Moonfolk) Species Details
"You wish to know of the legends of Kamigawa?" The soratami scroll-keeper leans forward, peering at you through silvery rimmed spectacles. "Normally, I'd have turned you away at the door," says the soratami, smiling humorlessly, "but you've made me an offer I can't refuse. I would see this rare flower you claim to possess. As you can see, I am a collector of many things." He gestures to an elegantly carved cherrywood rack standing against the wall behind him upon which sit fabulous trinkets of all descriptions. "Most of my kind have little need for the artifacts of those who dwell beneath the clouds. You might say I'm a rare exception." Reaching down to a long drawer at his feet, he pulls out a dusty scroll and spreads it on the table before you. The yellowed paper is covered in the delicate cursive whorls of an ancient script...
The Moonfolk or Soratami (Japanese: 空そら民たみ; literally "Skyfolk") are an enigmatic race of humanoid beings who are capable of flight and dwell in Kamigawa's clouds.
Elegant and beautiful yet somewhat aloof, physically, they are slim, posses blue-gray skin, and have long ears which some wrap over their heads.
Above the Clouds
During the time of the Kami War, the blue-aligned soratami helped the humans of Kamigawa fight the kami -- in their own remote and secretive way. They resembled tall, elegant humans, except for their very pale skin, long ears, flowing silver hair and animated runes in place of eyebrows.
The soratami were masters of air magic; they walked the air as if it were solid land, and wove rainclouds as if they were thread.
Homeland
The Moonfolk live within floating palaces, of which their greatest structure on the clouds is a palace named Oboro (or Otawara). They watch over the world below, mostly indifferent to the concerns of the surface folk. They have a high emphasis on the study of magic and have some of the most learned mages on the plane. Their knowledge of the metaphysical forces on their own plane is unparalleled.
Soratami Names
Soratami usually have a single unique name given by their parents. The concept of family is seen differently, as they share their lives with the community, not only with those who they share blood with.
A Soratami of either gender may have one of these names: Uyo, Chiyo, Meloku, Eitoku, Tamiyo, Genku, Hiroku, Rumiyo, Nashi, Hisoka, Azami, Kobo or Riko.
SORATAMI BACKGROUNDS
Backgrounds that are most appropriate for soratami include the sage, the cloistered scholar, and the far traveler.
The small colonies of soratami are far and remote, and few soratami live away from their homes. In the floating palaces around the realms, no more than a few dozen soratami can be found away from the nests of their families. Those that do are usually wizards seeking knowledge or knights protecting their people.
