Homebrew Alseid Species Details
Sallud muttered to himself "I'm not going to freeze to death
out here." His horse had slipped on the ice and thrown him
from the saddle. Now Sallud hopelessly lost in the woods.
Despite the blizzard raging all around him, he set forth
aimlessly through the thick, falling snow. Shards of ice stung
his face as he clawed his way through the slushy underbrush.
Climbing down a wooded hill, his foot caught on a branch and
tumbled through the bottom of the incline. His vision spun,
faded and then, when he opened his eyes, he beheld a hidden
world.
A grove, he'd stumbled across a threshold into a grove. A
vibrant green meadow opened up before him, flowers of all
kinds sprouted to meet him. Just ahead of him, Sallud beheld
a majestic creature emerge from a crest on the horizon. A
hoofed creature, with the torso of a human man, but the body
of a deer. A centaur? He thought, but no, this was not a
centaur.
As the Alseid approached, he saw that foliage danced
amongst its mighty antlers and that the flowers and the
plants in the grove bowed to the creature.
There was one last thing Sallud noticed too late, his
attention held to long the flowers that grew from
the Fey’s skin. The Alseid raised its arm. Once
the action was finished Sallud noticed it, and
the bow in her hands. That was the last image
he saw before an arrow sunk into his chest.
Grove Tenders
Alseids are born within groves that have a particularly
strong connection to the Feywild. They are born to a
singular parent, their mother, which keeps watch
over the young Fey and rears them. Their father
is never known to the Alseid, as they are very
territorial Fey and would not venture into another’s
grove, nor allow another to venture into theirs, atleast
not for very long. Male Alseids leave their grove to find
a mate, leaving their groves untended for this period of
time. As the Alseid grows old enough to survive on its
own the mother leaves the grove in their care, and departs.
When an Alseid leaves their grove, after rearing their
single foal, they take part of the grove with them. Plants from
the grove they tended grow from their hooves and reach
along their legs, their antlers also carry similar plant growth,
and their hoof prints carry small and momentary bursts of
flowering life.
Half Deer All Fey
The Alseid is a Fey with a Humanoid looking torso whose
waist is connected to the body of a deer. That is to say they
look as if they have a humanoid torso connected to the body
of a deer. Additionally the Alseid are often considered to be
cousins of the centaur, due to how they look. None of these
comparisons are correct outside of a cursory, surface level,
visual comparison. The Alseid may look like all of these
things, but they are full Fey and in no way related to man,
deer, or centaur.
The first and biggest difference is the plant life that grows
from the Alseid. While primarily growing from their hooves
and antlers, these plants can grow from any part of the Alseid
and they are part of the Alseid itself. The Alseid’s skin, and
the plants that grow from it, are a combination of flesh and
plant tissue. The antlers that grow from the Alseid’s
head are similar in construction to their
skin, where it is a mix of bone and plant
tissue as well.

An Alseid’s antlers are sexual dimorphic; The more female
presenting Alseid have smaller and thinner antlers that more
resemble branches of a tree, while male presenting Alseids
are adorned with much larger antlers that more resemble
crowns or crests. Foliage grows from the Alseid’s head, and
the antlers themselves, and intertwines with their antlers.
While both presenting genders of Alseids will have thick, lush
foliage in their antlers only the female presenting ones will
flower. These flowers are always in the height of bloom and it
is not uncommon for them to attract bees, butterflies,
hummingbirds, or other animals that feed off of pollen and
nectar from these flowers. If insects and animals that are
indigenous to the type of grove the Alseid came from are in
the area, they will be intensely drawn to the Alseid’s floral
crown.
The flora that grows as a part of the Alseid sprout primarily
from their crown and hooves. These plants will climb up their
legs, back and even up to their humanoid shoulders. The
actual flora is the indigenous flora of the grove that they were
born in, so that they keep it with them always. They are as
much the living grove itself as they are its guardian.
Solitary and Aggressive
An Alseid’s grove is a personal thing. They do not share it
with their parentage, or any other, it is theirs to protect. In
actuality, these groves are strong connection points to the
Feywild and make for easy travel between the two planes, and
the Alseid are their guardians.
Whenever an Alseid’s grove is trespassed upon, the response
can be quick and violent. They are very protective of what is
theirs, grove or no, and will suffer harsh punishments upon
those that harm or take from them. Even picking a flower
growing from the antlers of an Alseid might end with the
picker losing a limb. Each Alseid has their own particular
sense of ownership, which makes dealing with one even
trickier. While one Alseid may allow for one to stick out their
hand in an attempt to lure the butterflies that flit around their
head to land on it, another Alseid may cut off that hand for
even attempting it.
Alseid Adventurers
There are two primary sources of Alseid adventurers,
mothers who have raised a foal and transferred their grove to
them, and those that have lost their grove to other means.
Out of the two mentioned, mothers are the most common as
they have nowhere to go once their grove has been given over
to their foal, and those that do not travel to the Feywild travel
out into the wider world. These Alseid work well as Rangers,
Druids, Nature Clerics, or Fighters who protect their allies,
as the Alseid protected their foal and grove.
Those that lost their groves offer more interesting roleplay
possibilities. While the ability score improvements do not
lean into this choice, but a Barbarian Alseid who lost their
grove, or an Oath of Vengeance Paladin would be very
flavorful if you lean into the story thread of seeking out those
that destroyed your grove.Sallud muttered to himself "I'm not going to freeze to death
