Homebrew Voidling Species Details

Voidlings are created when changelings are exposed to Negative Energy Planes, such as the Void and Shadowfell, for prolonged periods of time and are able to adapt to them and survive. The negative energy of the plane begins to fuse with a changeling's soul and alters their appearance. The effects of this energy mutes a changelings ability to change shape, but also awakens latent psychic abilities.

Voidlings often feel that they have lost a part of themselves because of their inability to shapechange and may choose a new name in an attempt to overcome this loss. It is a rare occurrence for a creature to spend extended amounts of time in a negative energy plane as they are extremely hazardous for living things, and are not often ventured by even the most experienced of adventurers. The few voidlings that may survive rarely find a way back to the material plane. Therefore, voidlings are an extremely rare race, and most people live their whole life without seeing one.

Voidlings can somewhat vary in appearance, but generally they have a darker skin tone ranging from deep purple to black, completely black eyes, and pointed ears similar to elven races except smaller and with more of a downward tilt. They often maintain the light, almost white, hair of a changeling's true form. Their canine teeth may be more prominent depending on the available food sources of the plane in which they changed. Voidlings often have a more muscular build than changelings and are also usually taller. Due to similarities, those that have a chance to see a voidling may mistake them for a drow, but there are key differences that show on closer inspection.

Voidling Traits

Voidlings have adapted new traits that differ from their changeling counterparts. These adaptions help them to survive for longer in the harsh environments that created them.

Ability Score Increase.

Your Wisdom score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Age.

Voidlings seem to reach adulthood at the same rate as changelings, but it is unknown whether they age at the same rate from then on. There is speculation that they may age at a slower rate than changelings, and therefore have longer lifespans, but this has not yet been verified.

Alignment.

Voidlings often spent time alone focused on survival, in which they had no rules or structures to guide them. This reliance on themselves makes them commonly lean towards aspects of chaos.

Size.

Your size is Medium.

Speed.

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Void Speech.

You can speak telepathically to any creature you can see, provided the creature is within a number of feet of you equal to 10 times your level. You don't need to share a language with the creature for it to understand your telepathic utterances, but the creature must be able to understand at least one language.

When you're using this trait to speak telepathically to a creature, you can use your action to give that creature the ability to speak telepathically with you for 1 hour or until you end this effect as an action. To use this ability, the creature must be able to see you and must be within this trait's range. You can give this ability to only one creature at a time; giving it to a creature takes it away from another creature who has it.

Innate Psychic.

Your psychic abilities have awoken, allowing you to cast Detect Thoughts once every short or long rest with this trait, without the need of verbal, somatic, or material components.

Voidling Instincts.

You gain proficiency with two of the following skills of your choice: Deception, Insight, Persuasion, and Survival.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Deep Speech.
