Homebrew Brownie Species Details

Brownies are exceedingly playful among themselves, but they are usually demure when they know that any human eye sees them. They commonly aid those people to whom they take a fancy, and, frequently, they have been known to perform the most friendly acts towards men and women.

Brownies are friendly creatures who like to live among the other races. They resemble smaller caricatures of gnomes, with thick brown hair and exaggerated pointy or rotund features. They are often naked or dressed in rags. Brownies can be attracted to homes and farms with offerings, such as a bowl of milk or cream, or a small cake. These offering are usually left on the hearth.

Mischievous Sprites

Brownies like to work alone and avoid being seen and are usually not given names. They are easily offended and, if they feel insulted or in any way taken advantage of, they vanish forever, wrecking all their work before leaving and taking the prosperity of the house with them. Brownies enjoy pulling pranks on lazy servants.

The Brownies are believed by some to be the spirits of the people who inhabited this land many thousands of years ago—long, long before humans came. That they were not good enough to inherit the joys of heaven, but that they were too good to be condemned to eternal fires. They were said to be poor innocents. When they first came into this land, they were much larger than they are now, but ever since they have been getting smaller and smaller.

Household Guardians

Brownies are said to come out at night while the owners of the house are asleep and perform various chores and farming tasks. However, they will refuse to work for a family if they are given a name or a gift of clothing.

“This spirit was purely of the household. Kindly and good, he devoted his every care to benefit the family with whom he had taken up his abode.”
