Homebrew Spriggan Species Details

This is known, that they were a remarkably mischievous and thievish tribe. If ever a house was robbed, a child stolen, cattle carried away, or a building demolished, it was the work of the spriggans. Whatever commotion took place in earth, air, or water, it was all put down to the work of these creatures.

Spriggans are grotesque creatures with wizened features and crooked bodies. Often mistreated and marginalized by other folk, they defend themselves from danger by expanding their diminutive stature to giant proportions.

Malevolent Creatures

Nobody knows where spriggans come from. According to some legends, they were once giants who were punished for their hubris to roam the lands as shadows of their former glory, trapped in tiny frail bodies that retain but a smidgen of their previous strength. In other stories, they are the descendants of an evil family of forest gnomes, tainted by a dark curse that forces them to lose control over their own bodies. Whatever their origins, townsfolk know to keep their distance from spriggans, as they only wander around ill-fated places. Spriggans are seen as bringers of misfortune, from blighted crops to bad weather and illness.

Buried Treasures

Spriggans are avid collectors of treasure, and they usually protect their most prized possessions by stashing them underground in lonely places, such as castle ruins, barrows, standing stones and windswept crags.

The spriggans are quite a different class of beings. They are found only about the cairns, coits, or cromlechs, burrows, or detached stones, with which it is unlucky for mortals to meddle.

Spriggan Traits

Ability Score Increase

Your Wisdom score increases by 2, and your Dexterity score increases by 1.

Age

Spriggans mature at the same rate humans do, but they can live from 500 to almost 700 years.

Alignment

Spriggans are inclined toward evil and chaos. Good spriggans are extremely rare.

Fey

Your creature type is fey, rather than humanoid.

Size

Spriggans are between 3 and 4 feet tall and average about 30 pounds. Your size is Small.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Enlarge

As a reaction when you take damage, you can cast the enlarge/reduce spell on yourself once with this trait, using only the spell’s enlarge option. You regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for this spell.

Evil Eye

You have the ability to place a wicked curse on someone. As a bonus action, choose one creature you can see within 30 feet of you. The target is cursed for 1 minute. While cursed, the target has disadvantage on attack rolls against you. In addition, when the target rolls a 20 on the d20 for an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, treat that roll as a 1. You can’t use this trait again until you finish a short or long rest.

Feystone

You know the magic stone cantrip. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for it.

Spriggan Resilience

You have advantage on saving throws against illusions and against being charmed.

You can speak, read, and write Common and Sylvan.
