Homebrew Awakend Horse Species Details

The horse an odd-toed ungulate mammal.  Horses' anatomy enables them to make use of speed to escape predators and they have a well-developed sense of balance and a strong fight-or-flight response.  Horse breeds are loosely divided into three categories based on general temperament: spirited "hot bloods" with speed and endurance; "cold bloods", such as draft horses and some ponies, suitable for slow, heavy work; and "warmbloods", developed from crosses between hot bloods and cold bloods, often focusing on creating breeds for specific riding purposes.

Hoof and Mane

Horses come in shades of brown, tan, red and black.  Common combinations are Bay (brown bodies and black manes, tails, and points, Chestnut (red coats ranging from light to dark), Black, Grey (this term is also used for horses that appear 'white'),  Dun ( a variety of shades but showing dorsal stripe, horizontal striping on legs, dark-tipped ears, dark points on the face or shoulder blade stripes, Palomino (golden coats and creamy white manes and tails), Roan (white hairs or ticking throughout the coats), Appaloosa (spotted or blanketed), Pinto (color splashed over a light color.).  

Lateral Eyes

They are lateral-eyed, meaning that their eyes are positioned on the sides of their heads. This means that horses have a range of vision of more than 350°, with approximately 65° of this being binocular vision and the remaining 285° monocular vision.  Horses have excellent day and night vision, but they have two-color, or dichromatic vision.

Riders

If a horse chooses to allow humanoid riders, they can use the Animal Handling skill to co-ordinate with the rider.

Hooves

Horses can use their hooves as a devastating attack, but also suffer penalty on any actions that would normally require hands.

Age

Unless otherwise magically altered an awakened horse lives no longer than a normal horse. They reach full adult development by age five, and have an average lifespan of between 25 and 30 years.

Languages

You can speak, read, and (up to the limitations of what can be done with hooves) write one language known by the spellcaster that awakened you.

Peripheral Vision

A horse's lateral eyes gives a wide field of vision. You do not suffer penalties to Perception for attackers approaching from the side or rear.

Standing Rest

An Awakened Horse can four hours a day in standing rest. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.

Ability Score Increase

A horse's Strength score increases by 4 with a maximum of 24.
