Homebrew Draconome Species Details

Adorable Anomolies

Nobody really understands the sheer mechanics of it, but half-dragon-half-gnomes (draconomes for short) are born of a willing union between dragon and gnome (pretty self-explanatory really).

With softer features than a typical dragonborn, and ever-so-slightly taller than a normal gnome, these hybrids are singularly adorable. Often times, the hair color of the gnome parent will mix and swirl among the color of the dragon parent's scales, creating an almost calico quality to their offspring. Anyone unfamiliar with a draconome's particular circumstances (generally everyone, due to their rarity) mistakes them for an adolescent dragonborn, treating them like a child; they will capitalize on these mistakes, manipulating people to their advantage. Or flambéing them with their breath. It depends on the day.

Although their half-dragon nature makes procreation borderline impossible outside of other draconomes, they are blessed with exceptionally long-age for an average gnome (and many times that of an average dragonborn).

Different by Design

A draconome's upbringing can have an immense impact on their talents when reaching adulthood. If raised mainly by dragonborn, being surrounded by their brawny brethren encourages them to develop their mental talents; while a gnomish upbringing will develop their physical strength. They view their difference as their strength, and go out of their way to increase it. While they are proud of their dual-heritage (as they are of anything about themselves), they will not go out of their way to learn a language uncommon to their surroundings.

Regardless of their upbringing, they see themselves as unique - even superior - to their peers. They will seek out opportunities to prove this fact time and time again, nurturing an unquenchable thirst for acclaim and accolades.

Inevitably Alone

As the many years pass by, the differences between a draconome and their people become harsher and harsher. Regardless of their upbringing, they invariably watch as their friends and loved ones grow old and die. Their inability to find another of their race, or produce children, opens a hole in their hearts. This could drive them to madness,  seek out their pure-dragon parent, or search for similarly long-living companions. But always it drives them to leave their homes. They yearn to fill the void in their hearts, and may attempt to do so with either love or power.

Or perhaps the compulsion to garner glory and accolades takes the form of wanderlust. Not content to merely be the best in their village, they go off in search of new rivals and challenges in distant lands, leaving family and friends behind.

Draconome Names

Naming conventions may follow either gnomish or draconian traditions, though at some point their inflated sense of self will compel them to make their own unique name. It may begin as a self-styled nickname in childhood, but they will insist on using it as their "true" name upon reaching adulthood. Often they will incorporate the name of whichever parent they view as more important.

Draconome Traits

You share characteristics in common with both Gnomes and Dragonborn. Higher ability scores are offset by lessened draconic powers.

Ability Score Increase

Your Charisma score increases by 2.

Variant Upbringing

A draconome's upbringing strongly influences their abilities. If raised by gnomes, they hone their muscles (+2 Strength, +1 Intelligence) and speak Gnomish; if raised by dragonborn, they sharpen their mind (+2 Intelligence, +1 Strength) and speak Draconic.

Age

Draconomes develop much quicker than a usual gnome, but much slower than a dragonborn, and settle down into an adult life by around age 25. Blessed with long life, they may live between 700-1000 years, though with such a small sample size it is almost impossible to determine with any real certainty.

Alignment

A draconome is typically (if there is such a thing) Chaotic Neutral. Their inflated ego and self-importance places them above the law, and does not (normally) concern them with the welfare of others. However, the excessive fawning or subservience of their fellows may push them towards extreme good or evil, especially over time.

Size

Draconomes are about 4 to 4.5 feet tall and average about 140 pounds. Your size is Small.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 25 feet.

Gnome Cunning

You have advantage on all Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws against magic.

Draconic Ancestry

You have draconic ancestry. Choose one type of dragon from the Draconic Ancestry table. Your breath weapon and damage resistance are determined by the dragon type, as shown in the table.

Dragon Damage Type Breath Weapon
Black Acid 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Blue Lightning 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Brass Fire 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Bronze Lightning 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Copper Acid 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Gold Fire 15 ft. cone (Dex. save)
Green Poison 15 ft. cone (Con. save)
Red Fire 15 ft. cone (Dex. save)
Silver Cold 15 ft. cone (Con. save)
White Cold 15 ft. cone (Con. save)

Lesser Breath Weapon

You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. This breath weapon is weaker than a typical dragonborn; a creature takes 2d4 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d4 at 6th level, 4d4 at 11th level, and 5d4 at 16th level. After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Lesser Damage Resistance

You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry. However, as your scales are thinner than that of a typical dragonborn, you only receive a quarter reduction in damage (rounded up).

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common, and Draconic or Gnomish (depending on your upbringing). Draconic is thought to be one of the oldest languages and is often used in the study of magic. The language sounds harsh to most other creatures and includes numerous hard consonants and sibilants. The Gnomish language, which uses the Dwarvish script, is renowned for its technical treatises and its catalogs of knowledge about the natural world.

Tiny Wings

A draconome may have the potential to grow wings and fly, though it comes at the cost of their other muscles, lowering their strength score.
