Homebrew Boss Monster [Undertale Goat race] Species Details

THIS RACE IS NOW DEPRECATED. IT HAS BEEN REPLACED BY THE UNDERMONSTER. PLEASE VISIT THE NEW UNDERMONSTER RACE INSTEAD.

This race was based on and heavily modified from Pixel4203's interpretation. It will remain available for archival purposes.

Primarily composed of magic, boss monsters are more akin to elementals in physiology than they are typical creatures, though in appearance they look like something vaguely akin to a mix of a goat, rabbit, and a bear, possessing long ears, horns, a wide and short snout, pawlike feet and hands, typically white fur, and notably, sharp, slightly protruding fangs. However, they are also very fragile, their bodies being as volatile as the energies that make them.

Upon death, their bodies fade to dust, the very minute amount of physical matter that was contained in their bodies, and their souls, briefly visible for a few moments after, shatter into pieces. Yet, curiously, their dust can be revived by the blood of a particularly determined being. The resulting monstrosity is a soulless husk of the former being, incapable of empathy, and sometimes will be bound to an object held dear to them. Otherwise, they find maintaining their physical form to be challenging, becoming dripping, amorphous shadows of their former appearance. If this blood were to be injected before their death, the same result will happen, except their SOUL will remain intact.

Boss monster aging is a strange process. While they age at a fairly typical rate, the process by which this aging occurs is quite unique. Boss monsters age when the energy from their souls flows to and from their family. When two boss monsters have a child, their energy flows from them into the child over several years, nurturing them until adulthood, at the cost of the parents' youth. Once fully mature, the parents and the child both cease to age any further, provided the parents choose not to have another child, or the child does not have a child of their own. If the child dies, the parents will cease to age further. If one of the parents dies, the other's youth will deplete twice as fast to make up for this. If both parents die, the child will cease to age as well, though they may be able to accept a "surrogate" parent, or more than one, to use energy from. The likelihood of this working decreases with age. A boss monster that does die of old age enters a "fallen down" state, becoming comatose, and over time will simply wither away to dust.

Boss Monster [Undertale Goat race] Traits

The magical, fragile nature of your body has many drawbacks, but even greater boons.

Ability Score Increase

Boss monsters are noteworthy for both their rarity, their natural aptitude for magic, and for winding up in important positions, especially those of leadership, whether they intended to or not. They are also fairly varied in their talents. Your charisma increases by 2 and an additional ability score of your choice increases by 1.

Age

Boss monsters reach physical maturity around the same age as humans, at 18, and are fully grown at 24. However, they do not physically age beyond this and will not die of old age, unless they have children.

Alignment

Boss monsters tend to be kindhearted, and are also strongly connected to and affected by emotions. They are most commonly chaotic good, though prone to resorting to spells or attacks to get a point across, sometimes not even realizing they're doing harm, but can be any alignment.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write common and undercommon.

Size

Boss monsters are quite tall at full maturity, typically range from 6' 4" to as tall as 7' 10" without factoring in horns, yet due to the miniscule amount of physical matter present in their bodies, are rather lightweight, ranging from 65 to 110 lbs. However, a boss monster's size might become stunted at a young age if their parents are deceased before they reach physical maturity, and at a youthful age are around the height of a human child of the same age until hitting a growth spurt at around 16. Your size can be either small or medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Innate Spellcasting

Boss monsters, being made of magic, have the ability to manipulate it at will from an early age. Choose any one cantrip and one first level spell to learn from either the sorcerer's or bard's spell list. You may use the first level spell once per day, and your casting modifier is either that of one of your classes or your Charisma.

Spare

Boss monsters have an innate ability to hold back the damage they deal if they are aware they could cause lethal damage. You may declare non-melee attacks as being nonlethal damage. You may also choose to deal half damage to a number of targets up to your CHA bonus when you deal damage to one or more creatures.

Intent to Kill

Whenever an attack targets only you, on a successful hit, the attacker rolls damage twice and picks either result they prefer.

Magical Body

Your body is made of magical energy. As a result, your unarmed strikes count as magic weapons for overcoming damage resistance. You also will be detectable to any method of determining whether or not something is magical, such as Detect Magic. Identify reveals the abilities of your race.

Fragile Soul

When you die, you turn to dust, and your soul shatters shortly after. If your soul would be taken from your body for any reason, your body will immediately disintegrate. You cannot be resurrected unless by true resurrection, or by resurrection only if the boss monster's soul remains intact.

Once your body is dead, you may roll a CHA save each round. Your soul shatters after three failed CHA saves, or if you choose to let your soul break. Successes will not stabilize your soul, unlike death saves. However, if a non-boss monster, sentient being reaches your soul, represented as a white upside down heart above your body, before it breaks, they may absorb it. You may resist this with a CHA save, using their 10 plus their CHA mod to set the DC. You may communicate telepathically with said being after.

Boss Monster Aging

If a boss monster has a child, their body will begin to age at the same rate as a human. If the child dies, the parents will cease to age. If the parents die, the child also ceases to age without assistance. A fully grown boss monster's age cannot be changed through magical means, and if an effect would age a child boss monster backwards, it ages them forwards instead, up to 24. For each year the child ages, the parents both age by the same amount, or if only one parent remains, 3 times the amount due to the resulting strain on their body. A boss monster will die of old age around the equivalent of 80 years of physical aging, give or take a decade, at which point they will enter a comatose state and slowly turn to dust over the course of a couple weeks.

Soul Absorption

A boss monster's body can absorb the soul of any recently deceased non-boss monster, sentient humanoid once per day, as long as they had a soul and their soul remains intact after death. When you kill someone with a soul, you can attempt to absorb it, and the soul makes a CHA save against a DC of 10 plus your CHA bonus. You can hold on to that one soul until you take a long rest, at which point you may absorb a new soul. You may release the soul as a bonus action in order to either gain temporary HP equal to your level or to reroll the damage of an attack.

If your HP drops to zero, the captured soul is released to no effect.
