Homebrew Catawong Species Details
As the close cousin to the tabaxi, this small creature is, yes, a cat. Unlike the tabaxi, a catawong resemble a house cat more than anything. As tall as a halfling, typically as temperamental as an orc, and as agile as an elf, catawongs are odd but cute little folk.
Furballs
A catawong looks just like their tabaxi cousin; just smaller. They look like humanoid house cats instead of wildcats, but who's to complain? There are many breeds of house cat anyway! Like the tabaxi, catawongs have fur, cat ears, a tail, paws with thumbs, cat-like eyes, and so on. A catawongs fur can be short, long, curly, or even nonexistent! Catawongs rarely ever reach a height of 5 feet; they are usually 3-4 feet tall, not including the ears. Catawongs also live about as long as humans, and a single mother can have as many as 12 kittens at once!
Hissy Fit
Most catawongs don't like getting wet; they hate using water for anything other than drinking. They prefer to groom themselves by licking their fur. Sounds gross? Maybe, but catawongs don't care. Like tabaxi, they tend to lean towards the chaotic alighnments. They're cats; it's their nature. Also, catawongs can throw a real tantrum when angry. They hiss, they scratch, they bite... Don't anger a catawong. Usually, when angry, catawongs puff up their fur and hiss a lot. Otherwise, a catawong is a curious creature with a tendency to get distracted. They love exploring new places. They also love laying in the sun when they have the chance. Scholarly catawongs usually reserve spots by windows so they can claim the sunbeam as they study.
Tails in the Air Because They Don't Care
Catawongs are strange creatures when it comes to possession; it's the same as marking their territory. Sometimes, they share, but otherwise catawongs guard their things like a dragon guards their treasure. They don't like things being stolen from them. Also, well-to-do catawongs walk with their tails high in the air, almost like a flag. This is a way of telling others of their authority. All catawong also display a rather bored attitude unless there's a fight or there's something to chase. And, just to make a statement, catawongs will sweep something off a surface, no matter what it is. This is generally seen as either an intended insult or a sort of bribe to get what they want. Catawongs aren't haughty unless they feel like they should be.
Catawong Names
Catawongs usually live in cities, so they often have human names. The rare few that live in a village all to themselves have names with lots of vowels. Females typically have 'i's and 'a's, while males have 'e's and 'o's. Both have the occasional 'u.' This isn't a strict rule, but it's preferred. Here are some examples of traditional catawong names:
Male: Cemoso, Museke, Bendol, Haulo, Zofoger, Wenll
Female: Parishel, Ritha, Quasii, Fushika, Benya, Nia
Catawongs do have last names, but they're more like two or three words put together. Examples: Bluefur, Raventooth, Leafcatcher, Dogscrather, Littleclaw, Bigbirdfeather
