Homebrew Wood Woad Species Details

A Wood Woad is a cursed soul, a victim of a Druid's ancient ritual to turn a humanoid into the protector of the forests. During the ritual, the heart of the mortal is taken out, replaced with a seed, while the heart is placed into a small tree, which becomes the wood woad.

Wood Woad Traits

Wood Woads have plenty of great strengths, but also some weaknesses.

Tree Stride

Once on each of its turns, the wood woad can use 10 feet of its movement to step magically into one living tree within 5 feet of it and emerge from a second living tree within 60 feet of it that it can see, appearing in an unoccupied space within 5 feet of the second tree. Both trees must be Large or bigger.

Fire Vulnerability

Being made out of wood, you are vulnerable to fire damage.

Bludgeoning Resistance

Bark is a very useful replacement for skin in certain situations. You are resistant to nonmagical bludgeoning damage.

Photosynthesize

As long as you are in direct sunlight and touching the ground, you can use a bonus action to regain 2 hit points, and for the next minute you gain 2 hit points every subsequent turn. If you leave the ground or leave direct sunlight, this ability ends. You cannot use this ability the turn after fire damage is dealt to you, and if fire damage is dealt to you while you are using this ability, the ability ends. Once you use this ability, you cannot use it until after a short or long rest.

Ability Score Increase

Your Con increases by +2 and either your Strength or your Wisdom increases by +1

Age

Wood woads are creatures who once cared about age, but no longer do. They cannot die by aging.

Alignment

Wood woads are made from people from all walks of life. They can be any alignment.

Languages

Wood Woads can be from any race in their previous life. They know Common, Sylvan, and one other language of their choice (No secret languages, such as Thieves Cant, but Druidic could be an option if the DM allows it)

Natural Armor

Wood woads cannot wear armor, although they can use shields if they are proficient. Instead, they have a natural AC of 16 but do not gain AC benefits from Dexterity.
