Homebrew Snappers (Tortle Subrace) Species Details

Descriptions

The snapping tortle is the aquatic cousin of the Tortle. Being born near water, brackish or otherwise, they are most at home in aquatic areas. Keeping in tandem with the Tortle nature they love to explore and wander often in a nomadic lifestyle.

Snapping tortle's color can range from various shades of green to brown to black. Their shells, which are part of their skeleton, often grow moss on them, adding to their camouflaging ability. The major physical distinction between their cousins are the sharp hooked beak-like mouth which enables them if threatened to lunge forward and snap at a target, and the spiky shell which unlike their cousins are covered in small plates covering their abdomens so they cannot retract their heads and legs into their shells like many other Tortles.

Tortle Names

Tortles prefer simple, non-gender-specific names that are usually no more than two syllables. If a tortle doesn’t like its name for whatever reason, it can change it. A tortle might change its name a dozen times in its life.

Tortles don’t have surnames or family names.

Snappers (Tortle Subrace) Traits

Your tortle character gains traits that enable it to cope with the perils of a savage world.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Age

Young tortles crawl for a few weeks after birth before learning to walk on two legs. They reach adulthood by the age of 15 and live an average of 50 years.

Alignment

Tortles tend to lead orderly, ritualistic lives. They develop customs and routines, becoming more set in their ways as they age. Most are lawful good. A few can be selfish and greedy, tending more toward evil, but it’s unusual for a tortle to shuck off order in favor of chaos.

Size

Tortle adults stand 5 to 6 feet tall and average 450 pounds. Their shells account for roughly one-third of their weight. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Being aquatic in nature the Snapping Tortle is slower on land but quite agile in water. Your walking speed is 20 ft. Your swimming speed is 40 ft.

Snap N' Bite

Snapping Tortles are named for the bite of their powerful jaws. They are not afraid to use their snapping jaws to their advantage, using them to lunge at and grab food or an enemy. Snapping Tortles are not typically aggressive, but may become so when feeling threatened.

When you use your attack action you can choose to lunge forward 5 ft. and make an unarmed strike against a target. If you hit, you deal 1d8 + your Strength Modifier to the target and they are considered grappled. While the target is grappled this attack can't be used to attack a different target.

Hold Breath

You can hold your breath equal to your proficiency bonus hours at a time. The snapping tortles are natural swimmers and can remain underwater for some time before needing to come up for air.

Spiked Armor

Due to your shell and the shape of your body, you are ill-suited to wearing armor. Your shell provides ample protection, however; it gives you a base AC of 17 (your Dexterity modifier doesn’t affect this number). You gain no benefit from wearing armor, but if you are using a shield, you can apply the shield’s bonus as normal. Also if you use your Attack Action to Grapple a creature and succeed, the creature takes 3 damage.

Survival Instinct

You gain proficiency in the Survival skill or the Nature skill.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Aquan and Common.
