Homebrew Wraithbound Species Details

Bound To Death

Wraithbound. The result of a wraith or similar undead possessing one of the living. When this happens, an eldritch bond occurs, fusing the undead to its host and binding them together. Consequently, the person gains and shares some of the specter's powers, being able to use them in powerful ways that give them a paranormal advantage against enemies much stronger than they are.

Society

Due to the incredibly rare nature of a Wraithbound, few are ever seen in civilized places. When they do appear, the change in atmosphere is obvious. Animals grow uneasy around them, and the air surrounding a Wraithbound grows cold and dark. Even light itself seems to shrink away from one of these spectral beings, as if afraid of what resides within them. Wraithbound have no place to call their own, and most spend their time on the road or in some remote sanctuary.

Appearance

Wraithbound are easily set apart from other races by several distinctions. Most are pale and lack a heartbeat, and some Wraithbound have eye colors outside the normal spectrum, ranging from fiery orange to deathly purple. They are cold to the touch. These traits leave most people to eye them suspiciously, making sure one does not try and induce chaos wherever they step.

Names

Wraithbound have similar names as humans, but some Wraithbound were once elves, dwarves, and even halflings. Most use the same naming conventions as their native culture.

Wraithbound Traits

Wraithbound are strong and resistant to usual undead tactics, making them formidable opponents.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.

Ability Score Increase

Your Constitution score increases by 2, and two other ability scores of your choice increase by 1.

Age

Wraithbound can live for centuries due to their undead fusion. They mature at the same rate as humans, reaching adulthood by age 20, but can live much longer, often exceeding 200 years.

Alignment

Wraithbound usually follow their whims, doing what they feel to be right for them. They value personal freedom and are usually neutral or evil, but some can have good intentions.

Size

Wraithbound are usually the same size and shape as humans. They can range from 5 to 6 feet tall. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

Due to your undead nature, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of grey.

Undead Resistance

The undead residing within you grants you resistance against the attacks from others of its kind. You have resistance to necrotic damage, making it more difficult to kill you.

Ghostly Fortitude

You gain access to some of the abilities shared with you by your spectral host. Once you reach 3rd level, when an attacker that you can see hits you with an attack, you can use your reaction to halve the attack's damage against you. During this, you appear spectral and incorporeal.

Spectral Teleportation

As a bonus action, you can teleport to an unoccupied space within 5 feet of one enemy you can see, provided it is within 60 feet of you, and make one weapon attack against it as part of the same bonus action. If the attack hits, the target suffers an additional 1d8 force damage. You regain the ability to use this feature when you finish a short rest.

Undead Destruction

If you hit an undead with an attack, the creature takes an extra 1d8 necrotic damage. This property ignores resistance and/or immunity to necrotic damage.

Grave Ally

When you reach 5th level, you can momentarily free your ghostly entity and allow it to assist you on the battlefield. As a bonus action on your turn, you may summon a Sword Wraith Warrior, the statistics of which are found in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes. If this book is unavailable, you may use the Veteran stat block provided in the Player's Handbook. This wraith is friendly to you and your allies, and it acts on its own initiative count. It gains a bonus to its HP equal to your level and a bonus to damage rolls equal to your proficiency bonus. You control what actions the wraith takes. It remains for 1 minute after combat ends or until you dismiss it as a bonus action. You regain the ability to use this feature once you complete a long rest. Once you reach 10th level, you can use the Sword Wraith Commander or Champion statistics for the spirit.

Deathly Nature

You don't need to eat, drink, sleep, or breathe. You still need to take a long rest to gain its benefits, but you may spend your time doing other activities, such as light reading or keeping watch.
