Homebrew Vengeful Spirit Species Details

Full Disclosure: This was made for a friend of mine, that he was going to be in my homebrew campaign that I wanted to run. Please discuss this with your dm before using this race in your campaign. Thank You.

Not Dead Yet

Your body may be gone, but your spirit refuses to leave this world till you have righted the wrong against you. This is usually personal, whether it was done by family, friend or a brother in arms. Your spirit will not leave this world till they are punished or lay dead at your feet.

Final Duty

Some spirits also have certain duties that they must accomplish before they pass on, that isn't punishing their wrongdoer. Example, a paladin that has been tasked to destroy a demon but has been killed by a brother in arms. Said paladin now has to find the killer but also destroy the demon.

Ethereal Appearance

Though you don't have a physical form, your ethereal body has some form of solidness about it which allows you to wear physical clothes and armour as well as wielding weapons. Your appearance is roughly the same as when you died though your form may look more withered or rotted away. Example a dragonborn with many of its scales missing and skin revealing bone and what little muscles that are left.

Risky Resurrection

As you have no physical body for your spirit to return to, resurrection becomes highly risky endeavour. This only has a 25% success chance of reforming the body and even then it will still not be completely whole. At the DM's discretion, powerful devils can make packs or depending on how much a certain god favours you can offer you a body for a price, this can be full service to it or a certain task of equal value. This will have huge mental and physical problems for the character in doing so.

0-49 failure and your soul is lost forever in the ether.  50-75 minor success your spirit is returned but with some minor deformities. 76-99 success your body is returned with minor deformities and some parts may still look withered. Natural 100 major success your body is returned whole.

Alignment

Your alignment can stay the same as it was when you died. However it can change dramatically on how far you are willing to go to accomplish your goals.

Resistances: Non-magical Weapons

As you have no physical body, non-magical weapons are less effective. Resistance to non-magical attacks.

Immune to poison

You are considered to be an undead creature (CR 1 1/2) so poison has no effect on you. Immunity to poison.

No Life Blood

As you have no form of life blood, so you have no way for your body to develop. Constitution -2.

Penance Stare (Optional)

(This ability is completely optional, please discuss this with your DM) You gain the ability to do penance stare. You can use this ability 3 times per week before it needs recharging. Roll 1d6 for number of charges regained.

As an action, you can use penance stare to deal 2d10 psychic damage. Range 5ft.

The target must make a wisdom saving throw. Fail deals full damage, Success deals half damage.

If the target is reduced to 0 hit points, they become incapacitated and their minds become completely broken.

Radiance Hatred

As you are considered to be an undead creature so radiant deals more damage against you. If radiance reduces you to 0 hit points, make a constitution saving throw to avoid you being destroyed.

Soul Points (Optional)

(This is also optional, please discuss this with your DM) Your soul has a certain amount of charges that can be used to instantly revive you to half your hit points when you are downed. These are limited to 8 charges throughout the campaign. When you use a charge, you lose a piece of your soul making you more driven to achieve your goal and it lowers your charisma score by 1 as you feel less of your emotions.

You can regain charges when you complete one of your final duty(ies) or a chance to regain some when you attempt a resurrection but only your spirit returns (Roll 1d8 and that is how many you gain). You lose this ability when you regain your body from resurrection.
