Homebrew Twilight Denizen Species Details

Once there existed a proud clan of sorcerers and innovators that, for their small numbers, exerted an imposing fear in the rising powers of the land. War had torn the once peaceful fields apart and bathed them in blood for fifteen years. Only this tribe remained in rebellion that would not be quelled.

Seeing the remorse and loss of his people, a wise and angered ruler made a rash decision: to remove this tribe in their entirety from the world. With the help of seven powerful mages and a deceitful treaty proposal, the king used the very magic this tribe had helped create to whisk them away into the border between our world and the Shadowfell. This place grew to, over time, be spitefully called the Twilight Border by the tribe, as they did what they could with what little magic they had left to escape. Over this time they became twisted, cruel, and bitter towards the people who had locked them away centuries ago.

Twilight Denizen Traits

Twilight Denizens share certain racial traits as a result of their culture and exposure to the strong magical energies of the Twilight Border.

Ability Score Increase

Your Charisma score increases by 2. Your Intelligence score increases by 1.

Age

With the preserving magic of the Shadowfell permeating their home, Twilight Denizens have been known to live much longer than humans. They reach maturity in their late teens and generally live into their second century.

Alignment

The Twilight Denizens have a very ordered society and have proven to be a stable people for many hundreds of years in exile. They tend toward lawful behavior and may have good or evil tendencies, but gravitate around neutrality.

Languages

With the few creatures that cross from the Prime Material to the Shadowfell and vice-versa, the Twilight Denizens have adopted both Common and Abyssal. There is also the local dialect, with a strong arcane tie, that is an amalgamation of both Common and Abyssal, but cannot be understood by those who speak either of the composite languages. This language is full of a variety of unnatural sounds, and always sounds as though it produces its own echo.

Superior Darkvision

You have darkvision out to 120 feet. Within this radius you can see in dim light as though it were bright light, and both natural and magical darkness as though it were dim light.

Shadow Magic

You know the Minor Illusion cantrip. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for this spell.

Interloper's Curse

Twilight Denizens are not accustomed to the harsh light of the Prime Material. When you are exposed to direct sunlight, you take 1d4 radiant damage for each minute you are exposed and are blind beyond 30 feet. What few Twilight Denizens that have escaped have discovered is a heavy cloak is normally sufficient to stop the burning, though the blindness will persist in direct sunlight.

Shaodwfen's Blessing

The magic of the Shadowfell has washed over you your entire life. You have resistance to necrotic damage.

Umbral Embrace

Starting at 3rd level, you gain the ability to hide in the shadows of others. On your turn, you may use your action to step into the Twilight Border through the shadow of a living creature within 5 feet of you. The creature must make a Wisdom saving throw equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier. A willing target may choose to fail this save. A target who is aware of your presence automatically succeeds on this save. On a failure, the creature is invisibly branded with the mark of the Interlopers for a number of hours equal to your Charisma modifier. As an action, you may step into and become a part of the shadow of a marked creature. While in their shadow, you are invisible and occupy the same space as the creature whose shadow you occupy. You are invulnerable in this state.

While hiding in a creature's shadow, you are still able to perceive the world around you out to a radius of 60 feet and can communicate telepathically with the creature whose shadow you are possessing. While in a creature's shadow, you do not suffer the effects of your Interloper's Curse trait. On any turn after you meld into a creature's shadow, you may use your full movement speed to resurface in an unoccupied space within 5 feet of the creature. You may take no other actions, bonus actions, or reactions in this form, nor can you move.

You may use this trait a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier. You regain all expended uses of this trait upon completing a long rest.
