Homebrew Albagûl Species Details
People die all the time. There's no need to be dramatic about it.
—Vesryn, Hellas: Clash of Titans
Perpetually the outsider always looking in, Albagûl tend not to integrate fully into communities, riding the border between seeking meaningful contact with a select trusted few and presenting a facade to everyone they encounter - all to spare themselves from being shunned by civilization, or worse, hunted down for existing.
Fey Legacy
An Albagûl tends to retain the majority of their personality traits from their initial birth as an Elf. They can be born of any primary sub-race and their physical characteristics often mirror their non-Albagûl peers on cursory examination.
Elves tend to have a noble disposition (some may even come across as arrogant). Most are descendants from one of the main bloodlines to move from the Feywild to the Material Plane. They a people immersed in magic and possess otherworldly grace.
In general they are curious, alert, and mentally adept. They retain their penchant for magic, art, and music.
A Consistent Outlier
Albagûl do not tend to take up permanent residence in cities or large towns and usually choose not to stay anywhere for too long.
If they make or find a Burrow far removed from the main thoroughfare of civilization they may be inclined to remain until the nearest township expands to a point that it encroaches on their privacy.
Aberrant Beginnings
Albagûl are the result of machinations by Illithids (specifically, their Alhoon variant) using arcane magic and the reproductive process to create new creatures -- a pastime that results in many horrific and assorted new beings. This variant race is not the desired outcome of these rituals, but most Alhoon are not tethered by an Elder Brain and work in secret from their Illithid cousins so they are not likely to be forewarned of the potential result.
Elves, due to their longevity, are often a favored sacrifice for an Alhoon attempting a periapt of mind trapping to extend their lich like undeath. Likewise, they are also a prime target for the arcane experimentation of Alhoon.
Albagûl can have pronounced or subtle physical characteristics as a result of the failed merge. Some may only have changes to their coloring or skin texture while others can develop tentacled mouths. Ultimately, the appearance of your Albagûl is up to both you and your DM.
Albagûl Traits
Being the result of a failed mystical enterprise and ceremorphosis, Albagûl benefit from a number of racial abilities that blend their Fey beginnings and their newly hybridized state.Ability Score Choice
The following choices are available (pick one from the list to increase by 2, and one from the list to increase by 1 for a total of 3 points.)
Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma +2
Strength, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma +1
Alignment
Albagûl can have any alignment. Their alignment is often shaped by their interactions with the world after their metamorphosis.
Size
Albagûl tend to retain most of their elven characteristics. They range from under 5 to over 6 feet tall but typically had slender builds. Your size will be medium.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Age
Once the process of becoming an Albagûl has concluded, they will typically live to be around 500 years old (combined age of before and after hybridization).
Maturity tends to follow the elven understanding of Adulthood, not tying it to physical growth. Unless they become socialized with another culture that view is unlikely to change after their hybridization.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common, Elvish, and one other language of your choice.
Keen Senses
You gain proficiency in Perception.
Fey Ancestry
You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put you to sleep.
Darkvision
Accustomed to twilight forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in the dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Trance
Elves don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is “trance.”) While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After Resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.
Chiaroscuro
When you make a Charisma (Performance) or Dexterity (Stealth) check, you can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the ability check.
False Impression
You know the minor illusion cantrip.
Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the invisibility spell once with this trait, and you regain the ability to cast it when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
Abhorrent Heredity
Starting at level 3, your intertwined Alhoon DNA allows you to cast the Detect Thoughts spell on a recently deceased humanoid creature provided you have consumed a portion of the creature's brain. In addition to the effects of the detect thoughts spell, you would be able to roll a percentile die to determine how long prior to the humanoid creature's death you can see through their eyes, as well as how long any language known to the deceased humanoid creature becomes known to you. Double the results of the percentile role -- this will equal the time in minutes that the information is known. An additional perception role may be needed to determine clarity of events seen through the deceased's eyes.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier (a minimum of once). You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
