Homebrew Awakened Mimic Species Details
You aren't like other mimics. For one reason or another, you have sentience. Perhaps some powerful mage crafted you that way. Perhaps a travelling group of adventurers decided to cast Awaken on you for their amusement. Perhaps you simply woke up one day and don't know why. Whatever the reason, you've left behind the life of a dungeon predator in order to become an adventurer.
Awakened Mimic Traits
Thanks to being a mimic, you have multiple abilities.Ability Score Increase
Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your Strength score increases by 1.
Age
Mimics typically take about 5 years to fully mature, and generally live less than a century.
Alignment
Most mimics, being mindless, do not have an alignment. Thanks to your awakening, you are free to choose whichever alignment you wish.
Size
Mimics can take a variety of forms and sizes. Your default size is Medium, though you can become either Medium or Small depending on your current form.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision
Adapted to living in dimly lit dungeons, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Shapechanger
You can use your action to transform into a Medium or Small object or back into your true, amorphous form. You can add up to two arms, two legs, and one toothy maw to any object you transform into. Additionally, thanks to your awakening, you can transform into a humanoid-shaped mannequin. This mannequin appears to be made of inanimate material and lacks any distinguishing features other than an optional toothy maw. You can use armor, weapons, and other equipment made for conventional humanoids as normal while in your mannequin form, provided you meet all the other requirements for each piece of equipment. Your statistics remain the same in each form. You choose whether your equipment falls to the ground in your space, merges into your new form, or is worn by it when you transform. Worn equipment functions as normal, but the GM decides whether it is practical for the new form to wear a piece of equipment. Your equipment doesn't change to match the new form, and any equipment that the new form can't wear must either fall to the ground or merge with it. Equipment that merges with the form has no effect until you leave the form. Transformations provided by this feature last until you use this feature again, fall unconscious, or die. You revert to your true form if you fall unconscious or die.
False Appearance
While you remain motionless and are transformed into an object, you are indistinguishable from an ordinary object.
Natural Armor
Your skin is somewhat capable of mimicking the toughness of wood, stone, and metal alongside mimicking the appearance of those substances. When you aren't wearing armor, your AC is 12 + your Dexterity modifier. You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC. A shield's benefits apply as normal while you use your natural armor.
Adhesive
When you hit a creature with an unarmed attack, you can attempt to grapple them with a bonus action. The target of your grapple has disadvantage on the attempt to resist the grapple.
Ambush Predator
You are proficient in the Stealth skill.
Acid Resistance
You are resistant to acid damage.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice, typically one spoken by your awakener.

Posted Jun 19, 2025I really like this build. I want to remix or variant.
