Homebrew Apeling Species Details

Apelings are a diverse race with subraces of various shapes, sizes, and skills. They are fur-covered humanoid creatures that usually reside in forested regions. Occasionally, they venture into other societies, and their chaotic approach to life often cause curious or suspicious looks their way. Some people find them fascinating, and others look at them with concern. Usually, Apelings enjoy their lives despite what others may think. 

Diverse and Chaotic

The chaotic apelings cause chaos wherever they go, having what they consider fun. Standing anywhere from 3 feet tall to 7 feet tall, they act frivolously wherever they go. The smaller apelings are thin and nimble, weighing usually between 50-65 pounds, while the larger ones are thick and strong, weighing up to 300-400 pounds. 

Apelings’ fur ranges from orange to dark grey. They have brown or hazel eyes. They like to wear simple, comfortable, and practical clothes, favoring bright colors.

Fun and Curious

Apeliings are an affable and cheerful people. They love their families and treat others with curiosity. 

Apelings are pretty defensive of their territory and belongings. Those who dare challenge them are often met with ferocity, even though apelings often wish to befriend others, mostly because they are simply curious about them. 

Stick Out in the Crowd, Hidden in the Shadows

Apelings do not blend in very well when they are operating normally in society. They are gregarious and want to make a scene wherever they go.

On the flip side, they are quite stealthy when they don't wish to be seen. Many don't know when they are there unless apelings wish to be known they are there. 

Joyful Pleasantries

Most apelings live in small, peaceful communities in forested areas. They rarely attempt to build large cities or even live outside of the forest. Typically, one apeling leads their clan, usually the largest and strongest of them. 

Some apleings live among other races, where the apelings’ dextrous capabilities are found useful by some. They are usually the life of the party wherever they are.

Apelings typically adventure because they are curious about the wonders of the world. Everything is an opportunity for fun or to learn.

There are three main kinds of apeling, Oranko, Simpan, and Goryl.

Your apeling character has a number of traits in common with all other apelings.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 2.

Age

An apeling ages at roughly the same rate as that of a human. 

Alignment

Most apelings are chaotic, rarely evil. They are driven by a sense of joy and curiosity about the world and others. 

Size

Apelings average anywhere from 4 feet tall to 7 feet tall. Your size is Medium. 

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet. You also have a climbing speed of 30 feet.

Animal Empathy

Whenever you make a Wisdom (Animal Handling), you are considered proficient in the Animal Handling skill. 

Prehensile Tail

Your tail is dexterous enough to use basic tools, pick up objects, and hold you hanging from something. Provided your tail is not already in use, tasks that would normally require the Use an Object Action can be performed instead using a Bonus Action. Your tail cannot wield weapons or a shield.
