Homebrew Yokai Species Details
The Yokai are a pacifist race of fae-like beings that hails from Nihon Island, a large island in northwestern Pingjing De. They live in small communities of no more than a few hundred people. These villages all have good relations with one another, and it is common for members of one village to visit another for several days at a time.
Because they live so close to the natural world, both physically and spiritually, Yokai have a limited ability to communicate with animals. A Yokai village is often populated with just as many animals as Yokai.
Unlike the communities of other races, Yokai communities allow animals to roam free, since they see animals as fellow beings instead of resources. Yokai that travel outside of Nihon Island often find it unusual, even offensive, that animals are locked up in cages.
Because Yokai are pacifists, violence is strictly prohibited. Anyone that shows violent tendancies is brought to a "Redemption Circle", where they must face their peers and see what their actions have done or could do. This is effective, and it quells the few violent Yokai that do arise.
It is extremely rare for this method to fail, but when it does, the violent Yokai is promptly banished from Nihon Island, and the news travels surprisingly quickly that that Yokai cannot be trusted. The most famous Yokai to be expelled from Nihon Island was Kusunoki Masashige, who went on to found the Sundarian Empire.
Yokai are herbivores, but they aren't opposed to other races eating meat. They see it as part of the natural order of things that this happens. It still disturbs them, of course, but they don't oppose them.
When creating a Yokai character, try to think of why they left Nihon Island. Maybe they were expelled, or maybe they felt wanderlust and wanted to discover what existed outside of Nihon Island.

Darkvision
Since you are accustomed to places where light might not always reach, be it the forest floor or in murky waters, your vision can pierce dark conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern colour in darkness, only shades of gray.
Forest Yokai
Forest Yokai live in the forested areas of Nihon Island. Their skin is usually some shade of pale green, and their hair is always dark brown. Their eyes can range from green to brown, with a select few having blue eyes. This colouration helps them to camouflage themselves in the forest.
Forest Yokai live in small huts that can house up to five people. These huts are constructed out of wood and rope and suspended high up in the trees. The Yokai get in and out of these huts by climbing up and down the trees. This can create barriers for outsiders visiting the communities, but the Yokai will make any necessary adjustments to help people.
As is the norm in Yokai culture, Forest Yokai allow harmless creatures inside their huts. Usually, this means chipmunks, squirrels, birds, and other small animals that can reach the huts.
Forest Yokai have small farms that grow all sorts of edible plants. These farms are large circles that are often upwards of 50 metres in diameter. that sit in a village's exact center. Any member of the village is welcome to take what they need from the farm, and everyone has the responsibility to help with the upkeep. There aren't any formal rules as to how much someone can take, but everyone knows that you should only take what you need.

Wetland Yokai
Wetland Yokai live in the wetland areas of Nihon Island. Their skin is a much darker shade of green than Forest Yokai, and their hair is a lighter brown. They use this colouration to hide amongst the brush, appearing as plants.
Like Forest Yokai, Wetland Yokai live in wooden huts. The difference between them, however, is monumental. Wetland Yokai huts are built similar to beaver huts. They jut out above the water with the only entry point being a trapdoor underneath the water. Inside, the huts are roomy, and they can fit up to ten people at a time.
Wetland Yokai also have farms built into their villages. But with Wetland Yokai, these farms are all around the village, in between the huts. Each hut typically tends to the farm area near their hut and only takes only from that spot. Sometimes, if a particular piece of farmland doesn't yield what a hut wants or needs, they might go to one of their neighbours and borrow the resources.
If this happens, the neighbour will almost always give the resources out of the good of their hearts. Sometimes, although this is rare, the neighbour will ask for a favour in return. This isn't generally frowned upon, and this favour usually takes the form of the borrower giving some resources in the future.
