Homebrew Deku Scrub Species Details

The forests of Termina, Hyrule and their neighbors can be called for the deku’s kingdom. For here grows the all eating Deku Baba with all of its unique properties, here lies the sage like Deku Tree and here lives the plant people that are called for Deku Scrubs. 

The word deku is commonly accepted to mean magically or unusually plant, and while there exist many different kinds of plants and material that have the word deku in its name it’s often the Deku Scrubs that first comes to mind when saying deku.

 

Plant People

While there exist some Deku Scrub that is medium size most of them are small, even smaller than some  human children. They have woden like flesh with brown bark instead of skin. Instead of hair they have leaves, flowers and other plants in a color mix of  green, brown, orange and very rarely the color pink, all in different shades. Their mouth takes the shape of an open funnel.

 

Deep in the Forest

The Deku Scrub can be found in most deep and large forests in the world. Seeing as many of the fey also like deep and large forests so have some of the fey and the Deku Scrubs been neighbors for a long time.

Deku Scrubs lives mostly in small groups which mostly consist of family or friends. These groups often wanders around and may sleep in hollow trees, bushes or among roots. But there exists one exception for living in small groups and that is the Deku’s Forests Kingdoms. 

These kingdoms are great cities made of old wood and trees. They lie deep in dark and large forests where the magic is as thickest and because of this few non-dekus have ever seen a forest kingdom. Most Deku Scrubs that live here look down on any beings that are not a plant being. This has made them very aggressive and territorial against most people and even some fey beings. They see many strangers and outsiders as enemies which is another reason few ever sees the forest kingdom. This has created a quite bloody history which is one of the reasons some people dislike and look down on Deku Scrubs, the other is that Deku Scrubs are plant beings.

 

Leaving the forests

There are many reasons why a Deku Scrub would like to leave his forest. 

Some wish to spread and collect music and stories they have learned from their kin, skull kids, fairies or kokiri. Stories and music that people who live far from forests have rarely heard.

Some wish to earn money, riches or just rare items which are nearly impossible to gain in their forest. They use the experience of haggling and bartering with themselves and their fey neighbours to become merchants.

Some want to explore and discover new and rare kinds of plants and forests.

And some simply want more independence from their families.

What the Deku Scrubs all have in common is a short temper and a dislike for being looked down because they are short and plants.

Deku Scrub Traits

+2 Dexterity, +1 Charisma, Fire Wood, Drift Wood, Water Skipping, Deku Nut, Planted, Flower Glide

Ability Score Increase

The Dexterity score increases by 2 and the Charisma score increases by 1.

Age

A deku reaches adulthood in their .... and can live for up to ... years.

Alignment

Most dekus leans towards neutrality. While they are not dark creature or followers of the the Dark lord they have always been known to attack hylians that have wandered to deep in their forest. On the same time they are also known for travel around and interact with many other races and also to actively trying to resit the Dark lord. The dekus really like their independence and are very protective of their forest kingdoms. Meanwhile have interacted with fey for so long that they have picked up the trait of nearly always following orders and laws according the letters. 

Size

A deku are around the same size as human child with an average size of 2,5 feet. Your size is small.

It exist som very vary rare dekus who are around the same size as a human.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Fire Wood

As a deku you are vulnerability against fire damage.

Drift Wood

You can't swim. You automatically lose any swim checks and also starts drowning if you are submerged in liquid.

Water Skipping

You can walk and run on water. If your turns end and you are still standing on water you falls into it.

Deku Nut

As an action you can spit out a deku nut. It has a range of 15/40 feet and on a hit it deals 1d4 + your Dexterity modifier as bludgeoning damage. It recharges on a 5 or 6.

Planted

As an action you can burrow yourself into the ground to gain half cover. While burrowed you speed becomes 0 and if an enemy that are within five feet of you tries to attack you they gain disadvantage on that attack roll.
To end this state you can either use a Action or a Bonus Action. If you use an action to end this state you can choose to launch yourself 20 feet up in the air.

Flower Glide

If you are in the air you can use a Bonus Action or a reaction to summon a bunch of pink propeller flowers in each hand, this means that you most use both hands to use this ability.  While holding the flowers you subtract 100 feet when calculating fall damage so long you are not incapacitated, you can also move 2 feet sideways for every feet you are falling. The flowers vanish after 30 seconds or if you touch the ground. Also if you get hit by an attack while holding them you need to succeed on a Strength Saving Throw to not losing the grip of the flowers and start falling normally. If the attack deals fire damage you have disadvantage on the Saving Throw.

When you have lost the flowers or they have vanished you most wait at least one turn before you can use this ability again.
