Homebrew Dhampir Species Details

Dhampir are the progeny of vampire and mortal, straddling a thin line between life and undeath, living an existence both blessed and cursed. Those that escape or spared the influence of their vampiric parents hide themselves among the mortals, but shy away from prying eyes to avoid a prejudice against an existence not of their choosing. A lone dhampir may live in self-imposed exile in the wilderness. Another might hide in plain sight within humanoid societies, adopting the surrounding culture. Dhampir tend to be introverted individuals, slow to forge relationships and fearful of their dark ancestry.

Children of the Grave

Due to the vampire's undead nature, the birth of a dhampir is rare. Dhampir abilities reflect those of the vampire parent, though far less pronounced. They do not share the vampire's weakness to sunlight, nor its aversion to holy nor running water. The impulse to consume blood and drain mortals of their life force is suppressed; dhampir need not either to sustain themselves, but may resort to their vampiric nature if worst comes to worst. Many dhampir that live outside of the vampire's clout become ideal vampire hunters, taking up arms and wielding magic against their own progenitors.

The Beautiful People

Dhampir are born with physical traits predominately reminiscent of their mortal parents, but are not without traces of their vampire progenitors. With sharp faces and lithe bodies, dhampir emanate an eerie beauty trapped in time. Despite their introverted nature, dhampir are gifted with honeyed tongues to beguile their way through heated tensions and into stations of comfort. Dhampir often have pale skin and eyes crimson as blood, and some are born with pointed ears; those born of a union between vampire and human may be mistaken for elves or half-eves by mortal society.

Dhampir Traits

Your dhampir character has the following traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.

Age

Dhampir reach maturity at half the age of their mortal parents, and retain their youthful appearance for the remainder of their lives. They live much longer than their mortal predecessors, most living up to 1,000 years.

Alignment

Dhampir value discipline and integrity, and tend toward a lawful alignment. Those raised by vampires share the vampire's tendency towards evil, but those that renounce their vampire parents can be of any alignment.

Size

Dhampir tend to stand between 6 and 7 feet tall and have lithe builds. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

The night has always been your ally. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Nocturnal Reverie

Dhampir do not sleep as most humanoids do. When you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in an motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear asleep, but it doesn’t render you unconscious, and you can hear as normal.

Vampiric Resistance

Due to your undead ancestry, you have resistance to necrotic damage.

Gloom Step

You have inherited a supernatural gift to vanish and reappear elsewhere. As an action on your turn, shadows wreathe around you and teleport you to an unoccupied space you can see that is no further than your remaining movement would allow. Until the end of your next turn, your speed is 0.

Lifedrinker

As a dhampir you do not share your ancestor's insatiable hunger for blood, but you have inherited the ability to drain life in order to bolster your own. You have fangs that are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal piercing damage equal to 1 + your Strength modifier. If you hit with your fangs, and the target is a willing humanoid or one that is grappled, incapacitated, or restrained, roll a d4. The target takes necrotic damage equal to the number rolled and you regain a number of hit points equal to the necrotic damage taken.

Starting at 3rd level, you add your Constitution modifier to the hit points regained with this trait.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one extra language of your choice. Dhampir may have learned their second language from either parent. Those raised by their vampiric ancestors are often tutored in a second language the vampire knew in life. Dhampir born to a humanoid with an innate language can inherit that parent's language. For example, a dhampir born to a mortal tiefling parent may speak Infernal. Dhampir hiding among the masses tend to learn the language of the society they choose to blend in with.
