Homebrew Boggart Species Details

Beware the peakland spooklights, Beware the lights of blue
Make sure your night-time wanderings are not the death of you
Don't turn aside, don't leave the track, for once you've spotted us, there's no going back
Through bog and mire, through pool and pond, sunk in swamps and depths beyond
O'er hill and crag, strange lights of blue
Wild boggarts now will dance for you...

Over the centuries, many Drow turned their backs on Lolth and their kin, inhabiting the upper tunnels of the Underdark. This affront would not be tolerated long, and her priesthood brought down the upper tunnels with tremors to crush the deserters.

The tunnels were sealed over the bodies of the Drow except where the peakland marshes dulled the tremors which shattered the stone elsewhere – they were not killed in the tremors, but the tunnels still sealed behind them, driving them to the surface.

Among the surface-dwellers, the Drow expected to be scorned for the actions of their kin, but their fear was misplaced: the Forest Gnomes who inhabited the lowland woods knew curiosity far more than they knew fear or hatred, and accepted the newcomers forced into their land with warmth.

Between the punishment from their own kind and the hospitality of their hosts, the Drow quickly abandoned their old lives and adapted to Gnomish society. The descendants of this union between Drow and Gnome became the Boggarts – the blue-skinned "Moor Elves" in crow-like rags, the will-o’-the-wisp Spooklights who take mischievous joy in leading travellers from the beaten path.

Boggart Traits

As a Boggart, you have the following racial traits.

Darkvision

Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions.

You can see in dim light within 90 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light.

You can't discern colour in darkness, only shades of grey.

Spooklights

Boggarts can use the racial cantrip Spooklights.

The Boggart also rests in the Spooklight form but, while resting, cannot move or use the attack effect of the spell, but are not detectable as being a living creature.

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 15 feet
Components: S
Duration: Concentration

The boggart creates a small blue flame within range and teleports into its space.

While in the Spooklight form, the Boggart is incorporeal and may move by teleporting up to 15 feet, or can make an enchantment attack against a target’s Wisdom saving throw to lure
them towards it.

If the target fails the save, they are pulled half their speed towards it and can take no other action that turn; if they pass, they suffer no ill effect.

Your spellcasting characteristic for this spell is Charisma.

The fire does not do damage but does illuminate 30 feet of dim light and gains concealment from light sources.
