Homebrew Ailurid Species Details

Ailurids are naturally adapted to arboreal life in their harsh ancestral mountain forests. Many Ailurids spend most if not all of their lives in the trees, some never actually coming to the ground, living in their canopy of suspended huts and treehouses. Your Constitution score increases by 1.

Additionally, you can choose to increase your Dexterity or your Charisma by 1.

Charisma: Due to their fluffy tails, distinctive markings, and general small round shapes, many people find Ailurids to be visually appealing. Additionally, due to their mostly isolated lives, many Ailurids are soft spoken and polite when dealing with others (even other Ailurids). Alternatively, the wish for isolation can cause some Ailurids to become more abrasive, attempting intimidation over politeness (which has the potential of still being viewed as cute by larger races).

Dexterity: Life entirely in the trees of a snowy forest requires a certain dexterousness, especially for those who tread outside of the boardwalks and buildings in the Ailurid's home canopies. There are no easy methods down from these trees, and Ailurids who descend to the forest floor must do so via the trunks of the trees themselves (though some supply winches may exist, they are rarely used, as the isolation and security of the Ailurid society is of utmost importance.

Ailurid Traits

These are the dang traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Constitution modifier increases by 2, and you can choose for your Dexterity or your Charisma modifier to increase by 1.

Age

Ailurids' maturity is somewhat difficult to determine from an outsider, though in truth they do mature at roughly the same rate as humans.

Newborn ailurids are very small, and are covered in grey to white fur. Initially blind and deaf, their their ears and eyes open after roughly the first month.

By year 2, their fur begins to show it's distinctive color. From year 2 to about year 10, the fur color changes from a light silver-gold to a shimmering red gold.

At age 16, the full color and patterns are present, and they've mostly reached the height they'll be for the rest of their adult lives.

Though they develop similarly to humans, they are relatively long lived. It's not unheard of for ailurid elders to reach upwards of 300 years old.

Alignment

Ailurids tend towards neutral alignments. Many Ailurids prefer a quiet, solitary life in their icy mountain homes, but may be swayed by pure curiosity to venture out into the world.

Though they may make selfless decisions and work for the greater good, it's not uncommon for an Ailurid to become overwhelmed and attempt to escape to a safer, more secluded area, usually from a higher vantage point (a tree, a tall rock formation with cover, etc).

Some Ailurids may, however, prefer self preservation above all else, and remain solitary and self-serving.

Ailurid society does not have strict rules nor specific religious doctrine, however breaking certain social taboos can be looked down upon.

Size

Ailurids are smaller on average than humans, and usually a little more stocky. Your size is medium.

Additionally, they are rarely slender, and often are noticeably chubby. You can weigh between 100 and 200 pounds on average.

Speed

Life in the trees makes walking on the ground a bit difficult. Your base walking speed is 25 feet.

Languages

You can speak Common, Ailurid, and a third language of your choice.

Cat Bear's Claws

You have retractable claws on your hands and feet. Because of your claws, you have a climbing speed of 20 feet.

In addition, your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Arboreal Grip

Arboreal life has adapted your feet to be able to rotate in a way that gives you an incredible grip when climbing trees.

As long as you are barefoot, or otherwise your feet are unencumbered enough to grasp with your claws, you have advantage on all skill checks affecting climbing on or remaining stable on trees and other plantlife analogous to trees.

Endurance of the Firefox

Your body is naturally adept at handling the cold mountain forests of your homeland. You suffer no ill effects from cold weather or cold terrain, and you gain resistance to cold damage.

Ailurid Hardiness

Ailurid are surprisingly hardy, and can survive fairly well in harsh conditions by natural instinct. You have proficiency in the Survival skill.

Isolation

Ailurid enjoy spending time alone. Even in their homelands, Ailurid spend much of their time isolated from their neighbors, either out in the trees or in their homes. As a result, they have a great deal of time for hobbies or educational endeavors.

You gain proficiency in two skills or tools. Additionally, <some per-rest ability that works thematically here, such that resting or being isolated in some way gives them a benefit maybe?>
