Homebrew Deer Folk Species Details
Spirits that were created as guardians of the forests, Deer Folk take their job very seriously. They separate tasks by gender, with Does gathering local fruits and tending gardens and Bucks fiercely protecting their tribe and killing anything they see as a threat to the forest and their home. They are a reclusive people, limiting their contact to those of their own kind. They do see that trade is necessary for survival, as they cannot possibly make everything they need, so once a week, a group of designated Bucks, knowns as "Tradermen" go into Central City to trade their goods and purchase needs for their tribe.
They are a fiercely patriarchal society, with an Pater Buck being the firm head of the household. Though most only take one wife, a few take multiple wives, though those are seen as strange. The Elder Buck is usually the chieftain of any given tribe, usually being the male with the largest antlers, for large antlers are a sign of great power and wisdom. They fight to the death to protect what is theirs and thus have a bonus to morale, though they rarely attack unless provoked or unless they see something in the forest be harmed, ie cutting down trees or hunting for anything other than sustenance.
Deerfolk who go against their assigned gender roles are usually seen as pariahs in their society and those who dare defy their role are banished from their tribe and ignored as if they don't exist if seen again. Also, deerfolk are not known for being adventures, thus should a deerfolk be stirred to adventure, they are shunned as well.
They are strictly vegetarian, preferring apples and carrots above all other foods. Salt licks and sugar cubes are seen as a sought after delicacy and they go to great lengths to obtain them. Women and men both shun jewelry and fancy garments, preferring simple garbs of neutral earth tones. They have a communal alter as well as shrines to Dvalin, the nature God. They tend to be fanatically religious and have a rigid moral code. They pride themselves as the Guardians of the Forest. Their hides come in various shades of browns and greys, from the darkest umber to a tawny gold color and from the lightest grey to an almost sooty black. White deefolk are rare and are often put in important religious roles, such as priests and ritual keepers. Their eyes range from black to gold and red has been seen. Their hair is usually well kept and isuis a similar color to their fur.
