Homebrew Bright Species Details

The Bright are beings born directly from the magic the lies deep within the roots of nature. No one is sure where the first bright came from, but their connection to the inner workings of the world shows where their heritage lies. Brights, like most other races, are roughly 5-6ft tall, humanoid, and built to withstand almost any climate. In fact, due to their light grey, to earthy brown skin, Bright's often get mistaken for Air or Earth Genasi. However, unlike the Genasi, a Bright has brilliantly glowing eyes, and magical tattoos.

Like the earth itself, Brights are deep, complex, and grounded individuals. Their deep seated love for nature drives their being. Everything is from and for the world, and they will go to any length to make sure it is taken care of.

Shardborn. (This is to the DMs discretion, this is how I set it up for my game). Unlike mosts races, Brights are the only race with the innate ability to do magic. Most attribute this to the races connection to the earth; however, even the Bright are unsure what causes this phenomena. Within the tribe, magic is seen as a connection to the earth. It is used mainly to heal, mend, and build. In rare cases, and only ever for protection, magic will be used as a weapon. However, there are some who chose to forgo this ability, for they believe magic will only lead to destruction.

A Life of Song. A Bright's life is filled with song. From sun up to sundown, beautiful melodies can be heard radiating from a Bright's homestead. In fact, the only time a Bright's home is ever quiet is during meals, and when they are asleep. The Bright believe that music, along with magic, is the best way to show the world their appreciation for all it has bestowed upon them. Indirectly, the bright's love for music causes them to be quiet popular among the Bardic Colleges.

A Tribal Perspective. Much like the Dragonborn, Bright's are separated into various tribes. Although, the Bright's devotion to their kin tend to be a little more relaxed, they still believe that their conduct reflects on the honor of his or her tribe. Each Bright knows his or her station and duties within the tribe, and honor demands maintaining the bounds of that position.

To show loyalty to their tribe, the right arm and chest of each bright is inscribe with tattoos that depict the entirety of their tribes history. These markings are called songmarks, and they show the names of elders, family, and the victories shared among the people. They are seen as symbols of great honor, are worn proudly for the world to see.

In addition. Bright's have a set of rules that govern their everyday lives. They are as follows:

  • Aloha. be caring and compassionate towards others. Show love and affection towards the world.
  • Ha`aha`a. Have humility, humbleness, and modesty.
  • Ho`omau. Preserve your culture
  • `Ike Pono. Know, feel, understand the world
  • Kokua. Help, assist, comfort, and support others
  • Mahalo. Thank others and the world for the gifts they bestow
  • Ohana. Unity and love within the tribe and family

Bright Names. Bright names have three parts. Their first name, their family name, and their tribe name. Within a tribe, Bright's will refer to themselves by their first names. Outside of the tribe, they will refer to themselves only by their tribe name. It is a privilege as an outside to know the first name of a Bright.

Bright Traits

Racial features of the Bright reflect their attunement to nature and magic itself

Ability Score Increase

Your Wisdom and Constitution score are increased by 1

Age

Bright’s reach adulthood in their early teens, and live roughly 20 years past a century.

Alignment

Being such a young race, Bright’s have no knowledge of true good or true evil. Therefore, they tend to be neutrally aligned.

Size

Bright’s, like humans, vary widely in height and build, from barely 5ft to over 6ft tall. Regardless of your position in the range, your size is medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30ft.

Shardborn

You are born from the stuff of songspeak and nature. This arcanic mixture somehow gives you the ability to cast magic without attunement to a shard. Wielding a shard doesn't give you any bonuses to magic, and non-magic classes cannot inherently use the arcane arts.

Radiance

The Songmarks (tattoos) of your tribe forever bleed soft light into your surroundings. You constantly have 5ft aura about you. This causes you to have disadvantage on all stealth checks.

A Bright's Touch

Given that your people were so recently of the earth, you have a sensitivity to the song she breathes. You can use this knowledge to feel unnatural occurrences within her halls. Using concentration, you can use this ability to gain a +3 to perception checks made underground. This Ability can be used once per rest; however, you may use it more for +1 point of exhaustion.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language. You can also understand the Songmarks of your Bright kinsfolk.
