Homebrew Dog Breed: Lycanfolk Species Details
I didn't write a lot of this I frankensteined a couple of dog races together! Most of it was originally written by reddit user Ksschank. I just made this for my players.
From the harshest arctic tundra and the most arid of deserts to everywhere in between, there dwell a diverse race of doglike humanoids, vigilantly watching for opportunities to aid the helpless and destroy evil. These guardians of good, known as the Lycanfolk, operate as small -- but important -- parts of a greater whole: the pack. Loyal and dependable, Lycanfolk make excellent comrades and fearsome foes.
Descendants of Nakita. During the wars of dissonance, Nakita the Brave served Edwa as her war dog companion. In the first battle of the War of Ternary, Nakita gave her life to protect Edwa from the Evil of Durim. Edwa awarded this by resurrecting her in an evolved humanoid form, allowing her to speak and wield weapons. After the fighting ended, Edwa did the same to a handful of other dogs, and created "The Pack".
Natural Protectors. When a Lycan notices a creature in need, they feel compelled to rush to their aid, but the form that aid may take varies between each Lycan. Those who have the builds to fight for the weak often do, while those of a less muscular build prefer to provide emotional support.
Lycanfolk paladins and clerics usually revere Nakita, but even those who don't will usually pledge themselves to Edwa, who prioritizes charity work and the forcible defense of the weak.
However, as is the case for every race. There are many Lycanfolk who turn to ill will, and will actively try to oppose their helpful brothers.
Racially Diverse. Perhaps more so than any other known race in Emel, Lycanfolk vary greatly in their relative physical appearance. Though all Lycanfolk carry the blood of Nakita in their veins, a millennia of reproduction has yielded a plethora of breeds to emerge. A Lycanfolks breed not only determines its size, but also their personality, and in some cases even their abilities. As such, Lycanfolk are able to thrive in just about any climate, and can be found in almost every corner of the world.
Members of The Pack. Despite the Variation among their race, Lycanfolk are almost always members of a medium to large size pack, in which each member plays an important part of the packs survival.
Lycanfolk living in an urban area usually do not live in organized packs of other Lycans, but consider the society of which they are a part of as their "pack", even if it does not mostly consist of others of their kind. on the other hand, those living in untamed parts of the world live in a completely structured family governed by a respected leader known as the "Alpha". The Alpha is generally appointed to that position due to their wisdom and combat prowess. When an alpha becomes too old to physically protect the pack, he will carefully appoint his successor, assume the title of Omega, and provide guidance to the new Alpha until the day of his passing.
Regardless of who the Lycan considers as its pack members, they can be sure that it will remain a loyal friend until it takes its last breath. No label is more dishonorable to a Lycan than the title of Traitor.
