Homebrew Chronomaster Species Details
History
The chronomasters were a discipline of people that experimented with the forces of nature to gain control over time, and eventually they were successful. By inflicting themselves to a painful, torturous experience - "The Orobouros Concotion" - the individual would find themselves with a vastly heightened sensitivity to time and by then administering a variety of Chronoforms - particles enriched with time, only found near a rift between space-time - the individual would then become a "Chronomaster" and with training could then utilise the time sensitivity and exploit it, thus being able to control time.
The chronomaster race was able to be formed due specifically to the Arch of Fragmentation, an archway etched onto a cliffface that has a deep blue fissure running across it into all planes of existance simultaneously. From this fissure a strange liquid - condensed time itself - flows into a nearby pool and it is this pool of time that is key to the Chronomaster progenesis. The nearby dust particles and general spores emanating from the ground become enriched with time and take on the form of the Chronoforms used to enable time control, whereas the condensed time itself can be extracted and distilled from the pool to create a more purified "Distillate of time" - the key ingredient of "The Oroborous Concotion".
However, there are not many Chronomasters overall in existance due to the extreme mortality rate of The Oroborous Concotion, having a 93% mortality rate overall due to the extreme pain it inflicts on whomever imbibes the concotion being unbearable to most. Moreover, of the 7% that are able to survive the initial effects of The Concoction some are unable to fully complete the process to become a Chronomaster. Due to the nature of the concotion and the tempestuous nature of time itself, there is a mighty cost to be paid to become a Chronomaster. The individual who takes the concotion must have at least 80 years left of their natural lifespan and in order to become a Chronomaster they pay the cost of these 80 years. In return, the Chronomaster becomes frozen at the age they currently are and they gain a mark to certify they gave been "claimed" by time itself. This takes the appearance of a clockface emblem somewhere on their body. Whilst this mark is present, the Chronomaster cannot be killed by normal means.
In order to kill a Chronomaster, one must remove the mark as by doing so all the years they have experienced, as well as the 80 years they intially paid, are returned to them at once, accelerating their body to its actual chronological age. Since many Chronomasters easily live for centuries or even millenia, this means instantaneous death. The only known methods of destroying a mark is to either use Erebus Shard tipped arrows or bolts, an Obelisk Staff which enchants spells to remove marks, or to fight with blades soaked in enriched time. By utilising these types of weaponry and dealing a strong enough blow, a Chronomaster can be definitively killed. Otherwise, even if the Chronomaster had been fully disintegrated, they would eventually reform, taking anywhere from a few hours to a few months.
However, if an individual attempts transcendence - they drink the concoction with the hopes of becoming a Chronomaster - and survive the intial stage, but would not naturally survive for 80 more years, they are in debt to time. This debt pulls the individual into a corpse-like state and they become a Chronowraith. The Chronowraith is a tortured state of existance and cannot be killed through conventional means - since it is still claimed by time - but nor can its mark be destroyed through the known methods either. To this date, the only known method of destroying a Chronowraith for good is by dealing a fatal blow with an "Oroborous Blade", a blade crafted out of obsidian with various runes carved into its surface with enriched time permeating throughout.
Society
Due to the 93% mortality rate and after that the low chances of passing the test of time, there are very few known settlements of Chronomasters. Any that do exist tend to either stay close to their place of transcendence - when they went from their original race to that of a Chronomaster - or they move around, not wanting to stay in one spot for too long due to their inability to age conventionally. Moreover, most Chronomasters tend to resemble young adults of whatever race they originally were which can be unnerving to other socities as they are unaging.
However, this is not to say that societies do not accept Chronomasters into their own. Far from it, oft Chronomasters who move away from their place of transcendence will tend to return to some societies comprised of their original race, choosing to act as a ageless protector for the area since they are functionally immortal. They are equally more accepted since with each individual that attempts transcendence, those who are either too young or old are immediately denied transcendence before they even imbibe the oroborous concotion. This is due to either the individual distinctly lacking the 80 required years or not having matured enough for time to accept them. Put simply, there are no visibly old Chronomasters or those that are visibly children.
Because Chronomasters do not age at all, being frozen in time as far as biological processes go, they do not need to eat, drink or sleep. Some can be found to meditate for a couple of hours out of contemplation, but it is not required of them.
