Homebrew Corn Thing Species Details
Bork didn't like walking. Yet he found himself walking a lot, under the hot sun, through seemingly endless rows of corn.Tall, healthy, delicious-looking corn. Bork probably shouldn't eat the corn, seeing as he has no idea who it belongs to or whether they would mind sharing it with a poor ogre who'd lost his way, but he was so. Hungry. And without sparing it another thought, he grabbed a husk of corn off its stalk.
"hhnNYYAAAAAAAAAAA," Screamed the corn as it punched him across the face. Bork stumbled back, watching in horror as, all around him, the corn grew eyes and arms and stubby little legs and crawled towards him, growling. There, alone, in the endless field of corn, he began to scream.
In a world of fantastical magic and nature-defying creatures, no race is less understood or more feared than the Corn Thing. They are raised from a young age to become some of the most fearsome warriors in the world.
Ugly As Heck
Corn Things inhabit a very small, hot part of the world and rarely leave it, so as well as being regarded as one of the most disgusting examples of intelligent life, they do not have a lot of variety. They are generally short and pony-shaped, with bumpy yellow skin, and giant squinty bug-like eyes. They look like corn come to life. If corn had stumpy limbs.
The Corn Life
Although they are small in numbers, there are very few who would attempt to conquer the Corn Things' corner of the world. This is because they are born from corn stalks, found, and put in a rigorous training program to turn them into killing machines. 'The Corn Life' is often what they use to refer to their secret training techniques, which they have never allowed anyone else to know. Corn Things are traditionally somewhat disapproving of magic, so in most cases they are taught the ways of weapons and/or martial arts. One Corn Thing warrior is generally thought of as equal to ten soldiers of any other race.
THAT ONE FRIEND NOBODY LIKES
Corn Things, while considered savage and not very bright, manage to be excellent speakers in most cases. This, plus the fear they instill in those who may cross them, means that very few go to the effort of aggravating them, even if no one is eager to rush to their defense.
A House of Corn
The Corn Things are the the best warriors in all the land. This doesn't leave a lot of room for builders. Corn Things all live together in one community far from any other form of civilization. With use of their remarkable borrowing ability (in which they drill into the ground headfirst) Corn Things produce large tunnel systems---though not very complicated as they are not very good at navigating them. They spend their days mostly above ground, sitting in the sun, and taking a nice nap. It is unclear if they are nocturnal or just sleep a lot. If one were to stumble across these creatures as they slept, one could easily be forgiven for mistaking them for normal corn and trying to harvest them. They won't forgive you though.
A Corny Joke
Considering their massive yet easily bruised egos and lack of wit, quick or otherwise, many are surprised to learn that Corn Things are big comedians. Interestingly, they never joke with each other and usually bond through fighting and napping, a Corn Thing's two favorite activities. "Jokes" are reserved for those of other races, and an example of the Corn Thing's supreme charisma and charm. You may not find them pleasant to be around, but you will be laughing your head off regardless.
To Name A Corn Thing
Corn Things use rather different naming conventions than most other races: all names are acceptable as long as they have something to do with corn, and isn't an actual word. 'Punicorn' is considered a good name for a Corn Thing, but Unicorn isn't. Similarly, Schmorn is a good name, but Corn isn't. All names are gender-neutral.
