Homebrew Ætherborn Species Details

Ætherborn spontaneously came into being on Kaladesh as a byproduct of the æther refinement process. "Families" of Ætherborn lay territorial claim to areas where young Ætherborn have manifested and instruct them in the way of their kind. Their bodies are in constant flux, as the æther residue they're made of gradually dissolves and is reclaimed by the æthersphere. Thus, their lives are short. But rather than despair, they savor each fleeting moment, squeezing out every last drop of enjoyment. Traditionally, before an Ætherborn dies, they throw a party with mandatory attendance for their friends and associates. Ætherborn that lack such social connections usually hijack the party of another of their kind.

Ætherborn have no genders and are referred to using they/them/theirs pronouns, though there are cases of individual ætherborn that adopted a gender and associated pronouns.

Age

Ætherborn are fully mature as they are created. Due to the æther they are made with constantly flowing out, they would have a lifespan of 4 years, but most leech the life force out of others, allowing them to live 300 years or more.

Alignment

Ætherborn tend to be Chaotic.

Size

Ætherborn are about the same height as humans, usually between 5 and 6 feet tall. They are light, though, around 100 pounds, fluctuating as their life force seeps away and returns.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Live Fast

Every two days, you take 1 point of damage and your maximum HP decreases by 1. Once per Reenergization, as an action, you may target a creature of Medium size or smaller that is not an Undead or Construct. They must succeed on a Constitution saving throw, with DC equal to 10 plus double your proficiency bonus. On a failed save, they take 4 points of necrotic damage and half as much on a success. For each point of damage taken this way, your maximum HP increases by 1 and you gain 1 health. This effect cannot increase your maximum HP to more than its starting total.

6th Sense

Ætherborn have an innate 6th sense that allows them to accurately feel the emotional state of humanoids they can see within 20 feet.

Reenergization

Ætherborn do not sleep or eat.
They get the effects of a long rest if they go through a period of 4 hours without speaking or moving except to read a book or some similar action.

Languages

You can read, write, and speak Common.

Ability Score Increase

Your Charisma and Dexterity scores are each increased by 2, and your Constitution score is decreased by 1.
