Homebrew Dragon Tortles Species Details

A mixed breed between dragonborn and tortles, as a result of the occupation of Eigin Island by the Cobalt Dragon cultists, they were subjugated to slavery by the cult and even when liberated by the monk Huzekai, it took some time for them to get used to being accepted by the native tortle community, who surprisingly brought them in with open arms. Because of this, most dragon tortles are integrated into tortle culture, though they resemble more to dragonborn than tortles, save for their massive shells on their backs. While they don't share the ability to retract into their shells, they are more adept swimmers than tortles and their dragon ancestry allows them to breath hot steam in self-defense.

Tortle Disposition, Dragon Tendencies

Dragon Tortles, like tortles, are naturally friendly and seek to explore and mend themselves with their surroundings, seeking balance and peace. However, they also experience a very pressured repressed rage and are more prone to explosive impulses when pushed too far. Typically, many have learned that the less a dragon tortle talks, the more likely they are to burst.

Takin the Heat

Due to their dragon ancestry, the dragon tortles are more impervious to heat and fire damage. Often times, they will use their steam breath on each other as a therapeutic method to calm themselves down.

Dragon Tortle Names

Dragon Tortles, like dragonborn, have personal names given at birth, but they put their clan names first as a mark of honor. A childhood name or nickname is often used among clutchmates as a descriptive term or a term of endearment. The name might recall an event or center on a habit.

Dragon Tortles Traits

Dragon Tortles have the heart of Tortles, but the instincts of Dragonborn.

Adept Swimmers

You have a swimming speed of 40 ft.

Claws

Your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Natural Armor

Due to your shell and the shape of your body, you are ill-suited to wearing armor. Your shell provides ample protection, however; it gives you a base AC of 17 (your Dexterity modifier doesn’t affect this number). You gain no benefit from wearing armor, but if you are using a shield, you can apply the shield’s bonus as normal.

Darkvision

Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.

Age

Young Dragon Tortles grow quickly. They walk hours after hatching, attain the size and development of a 10-year-old human child by the age of 3, and reach adulthood by 15. They live to be around 80.

Alignment

Dragon Tortles tend to be more lawful good because of the Tortle influence of their native communities. However, often times, they show chaotic tendencies as their inner dragon impulses cause them to come up with creative solutions to problems.

Size

Dragon Tortles are taller and heavier than humans, standing well over 6 feet tall and averaging almost 250 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Breath Weapon

You can use your action to exhale hot steam. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 fire damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Damage Resistance

You have resistance to fire damage.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic.
