Homebrew Aetherborn Species Details
Aether..... The primary constituent of the ethereal plane. So easy to define, so hard to understand. Not even those made out of it can understand it. That is probably the cruelest joke that the gods could have ever made. ”
—Fragment of "Aether" by Severion, the Grand Wizard.
Aetherborn spontaneously came into being on Kaladesh as a byproduct of the aether refinement process. "Families" of Aetherborn lay territorial claim to areas where young Aetherborn have manifested and instruct them in the way of their kind. Their bodies are in constant flux, as the aether residue they're made of gradually dissolves and is reclaimed by the aether sphere. Thus, their lives are short. But rather than despair, they savor each fleeting moment, squeezing out every last drop of enjoyment. Traditionally, before an Aetherborn dies, they throw a party with mandatory attendance for their friends and associates.Aetherborn are connected to aether in a more intimate manner than any other race on Kaladesh: they are born of it, an unforeseen byproduct of the aether refinement process. Aetherborn are in a constant state of flux, always moving toward a form that can be recycled back into the aethersphere. The "reclaim" step of the Aether Cycle takes place inside an aetherborn's body. It's not a long process. An aetherborn's lifespan can range from a few months to a few years, and it is the fleeting nature of their existence that defines them. Each moment not spent indulging in fun or pleasure is considered a waste. They enjoy life with a contagious exuberance. etherborn who are unwilling to accept the decomposition of their bodies invent ways to preserve and augment themselves. The "gifted" among the aetherborn can draw the life essence of other living beings into themselves.
A few aetherborn have discovered a way to sustain their own existences at the cost of an insatiable hunger for the life essence of other beings.
An aetherborn wastes neither time nor treasure.
Aetherborn that lack such social connections usually hijack the party of another of their kind. Little is known about the aetherborn. It is supported that they are always born in the ethereal plane and their constitution, but not much more is known. They don't have interest in wealth or power, although they have been known as protectors of powerful secrets. They are never bound to the material plane and they do not form societies. Although there are some aetherborn in the history books, all of them have been guardians of powerful objects, tricksters in lairs next to conjunctions that go to the ethereal plane or wise beings that help travelers in said plane in exchange for a secret powerful enough. They are scarce and probably a couple of dozen exist in the ethereal plane at any moment, so they don't form societies. Each one is an individual and they only want to fulfill their purpose, if they know what it is. Their name is given by themselves. They usually use mystic elements as a naming convention. If they get assigned a task by external forces, they sometimes receive a name from their tasker.

Vampiric Gift
For many aetherborn, living as they do for indulgence and instant gratification, the concepts of “want” and “need” are virtually synonymous. But Aetherborn with this gift understand what it is to truly need, for they develop a hunger for life essence that far exceeds any desires they might have felt before their transformation. A gifted aetherborn who abstains from this feeding deteriorates even more rapidly than other aetherborn, while enduring unspeakable agony caused by the deprivation of life energy.
At the DM’s option, an aetherborn character can research methods of achieving this dark “gift.” The process is similar to inventing and manufacturing a rare magic item. But rather than aether, the process requires a variety of rare unguents and unusual ingredients that make up the cost of researching and undergoing the transformation.
An aetherborn with this gift gains a Drain Life ability, which is a natural attack that uses Strength for its attack and damage rolls, dealing 1d6 necrotic damage and restores the same number of hit points to the aetherborn. However, if the aetherborn goes for 7 days without dealing this damage, their hit point maximum is reduced by 1d6 per week. This reduction can’t be removed until the aetherborn has used their Drain Life ability and completed a long rest.
