Homebrew the Insane Species Details
They are human in every way you can be, but at first they seem insane, take my friend for instance, every night he would always talk about his "Friends in the dark" and he would constantly introduce us to them, what he would do is point to an empty spot somewhere near him and introduce us to his "New Friend" but there would be nothing there, it was scary, and like I said, at first they seem insane, but I have been around my friend for a LONG time, and I think that he is just cursed to see a world that no one but him and those like him see, but I have to say, maybe that world is a really world because strange things happen around my friend, but I still need to look into it, I mean, hes not telling me is he?
-Baldor Thunderhammer of the Blue Mountain Dwarves
The Insane are humans who were either born or cursed to be able to see and interact with the Shadow Realm, it consists of shadowy beings who mostly come in the general shape of a cat or malformed human (most commonly with long legs and arms being 10ft and almost poll like, or very round, but they can come in any shape or form) or some other monstrous form, even though it has a different name it is the material plane, they are simply unseen by all in the world, even those with truesight cannot see it, only those who are born or cursed with this can see them.
Unfortunately those who come in contact with the Shadow Realm go insane, they talk with those who live in the Shadow Realm and become friends with them, but they are forever assumed insane by the rest of the world. So those with an imaginary friend who is described as shadowy, well, that person may be correct, but unlike those with fake imaginary friends these people live with those imaginary friends for there entire lives.
the Insane Traits
It’s hard to make generalizations about humans, but your human character has these traits.Shadowy sight
You can see into the Shadow Realm and were thus given truesight, because all invisible things are in the Shadow Realm wither they know it or not.
Eternal Darkness
At 3rd Level you can cast Darkness without the material components once per long rest, and at 5th level it goes to once per short rest, charisma is your casting for this spell
Shadowy Friend
you have gotten used to seeing these creatures, or you have been living with them your entire life, in either case it seems like one of them understands you and wants to be with you, on a DC check of 5 you can get a shadowy friend who fallows you and helps you out, if you are a beast ranger this can count as your beast friend, one a success you now have a shadowy friends who can do things for you, this creature can pick things up and move things around and interfere on attacks against you (as a reaction you can impose disadvantage on one single attack made against you) it cannot attack (unless it is your beast ranger friend).
