Homebrew Awakened Wolf Species Details

Whoops.

Old druid saying

There are many ways in which a wild animal might find themselves under the influence of an awaken spell, but all of them are a jarring experience for the beast. For reasons you do not yet understand, an elven druid worked a modified version of the Awaken spell during a ritual on you, and you went from being a wild wolf to a fully sapient being. This effect is permanent to your knowledge and cannot be dispelled (the effect is no longer considered magical, it is simply a permanent change in your biology). You are no longer accepted among your own kind and must find your way through both the natural and civilized worlds.

Animal Instincts

You remember your time as a simple, low-intelligence wolf, but the memories are strange to you - not unlike trying to remember something from a distant childhood. However, you have retained your unusual sensory and instinctual traits that come with being a wolf.

Four Legs Good, Two Legs Bad

You're a wolf. This means you have four legs and no arms. This limits your ability to interact with objects and the world around you. Most equipment must be specially crafted or tailored to be usable for you. You do however have some natural advantages that come along with being a wolf.

Between Worlds

You are no longer accepted by your wolf pack; they can detect the changes in you. Truthfully, it is difficult for you to spend time among them as well now that you have sapient intelligence. However, civilized society has no place for you either. You are viewed as an animal still, despite your ability to speak, and few are willing to look at you as an equal. Trying to find a new home for yourself is going to be difficult... and wolves rarely fare well alone.

Awakened Wolf Traits

Wolves have many unique traits based on their animal origins.

Pack Tactics

Your experience hunting with your pack has taught you how to fight well in a group. Whenever you attack a target that has a conscious ally within 5 feet, you gain advantage.

Keen Senses

You may be smarter, but you still have your wolf senses. Whenever you make a perception check related to smell or hearing, you do so with advantage.

Natural Armor

Wolves don't wear clothes or armor typically. Fortunately, their hide is tougher than human skin. Your armor class is 11 + your Dexterity modifier.

Darkvision

You have darkvision 60 ft.

Bestial Communion

Your animal nature allows you to communicate simple ideas and concepts to beasts.

Natural Weaponry

You gain access to the Bite attack. When using your teeth to attack, it counts as both an unarmed and a weapon attack.

Let That Sink In

You may use a bonus action to grapple a target who has failed their saving throw against your bite attack this turn.

Look Ma No Hands

A wide variety of actions that would be available to most humanoids are unavailable to you because you lack hands and opposable thumbs:

  • Climbing is virtually impossible
  • Most tool and weapon proficiencies are unavailable, as are the use of most items that would require hands (this includes weapons)
  • You have disadvantage on sleight of hand checks, which can only be executed if you could reasonably use your mouth in the situation
  • You will require special training to execute the somatic component of any spell
  • Your carrying capacity is limited to 10 times your strength score (instead of the normal 15)
  • You cannot take object interactions as a free action in most instances; they instead require a full action. Typically simple interactions may also require skill checks depending on their nature.

Ability Score Modifiers

Your Dexterity score is increased by 2, your Wisdom score is increased by 1, and your Charisma score is decreased by 2.

Age

Wolves don't usually live long, and to your knowledge nothing about your magical condition has changed that. Wolves reach maturity at 3 years and can live to be as old as 25.
